Goa #2
The Arabian Sea at Calungunte Beach I arrived in Goa at about 3:00pm and it was an hour's drive to the airport. I checked into the "Casa de Goa" to find it wasn't exactly as advertised. They two bars were actually a few tables on each side of a corner bar while the coffee shop and the hotel restaurant consisted of these same tables. There were two pools, although one was round, only a foot or so deep, and about four foot in diameter. The wireless was "broken", although I suspect they didn't actually have it based on the puzzled looks I got when I asked about it each day. The free bottle of wine was the worst thing I've ever tasted and undrinkable after the first sip. The room was OK, although it turned out that the hot water heater was broken. Each day, I reported and each day they told me it had been repaired. The TV with "many channels of non-stop entertainment" actually got three channels and no BBC or CNN. They didn't clean my room the first day and said it was because I had taken the only key. The next day I left the key and when I returned that evening, they

Me in the Arabian Sea at Calungunte Beach! gave me a different key!
The beach was supposed to be 200 meters away, but it was actually a 10 minute walk down a dirt lane. It was OK during the day, but probably not the safest after dark. I headed to the beach shortly after arriving. The beach was nice and the sand was a golden yellow. The water was warm and you could easily have jumped right in. The beach by my access point wasn't too crowded and it was easy to walk without being disturbed. The closer I go to the main beach access, the more people there were and the more hawkers of fruit, jewelry, sarongs, and "funny Indian cigarettes". I just kept saying "no, thank you" and kept walking. Some of the women tried to grab my arm to stop me, but I plowed ahead. It was impossible to sit down as you were instantly surrounded. Only the very few westerners were hounded like this!
I walked for quite a ways and then turned back and headed into the town on Calungunte. It looked a lot like every other beach town with bars, restaurants, stores selling t-shirts and shells and other beach junk.

Cows eating garbage on Calungunte Beach I found a bar/restauant with outdoor seating and had dinner. Since I was at the beach in Goa, I decided I needed to try the famous sea food so I had "fish and chips" with Kingfish. It wasn't bad and tasted pretty good with my Kingfisher beer. It came with a fresh cucumber and tomato salad that the waiter assured me had been washed in purified water. It was sooo good! I miss salad, but it's usually not a good idea to eat it.
I was hoping to catch sunset at the beach, but it was very cloudy and starting to sprinkle so I headed back to the hotel. Not long after I got back, it started to pour. I think it's the hardest rain I have ever seen! You liteally couldn't see two feet in front of you. It was great to watch from my covered balcony, but I felt bad for all of the fishing people living in the huts along the beach. They're probably not very waterproof.
I got a good night's sleep listening to the rain. The next day I was scheduled for an all day sight seeing trip followed by a sunset river
