Hello everyone!
We know it's been awhile since our latest blog, but this one's good! It's all about our latest mini-trip to Hong Kong! At the last minute, Larry and I ended up having 3 days off together in the first week of February, and so we planned this trip in about a week's notice. As you will see though after reading this blog, it was well worth all the hassle and last-minute planning...We had an AMAZING time and fell in love with this city!
Day 1: On our first day we got up and headed to the infamous "Ladies Market," one of the best areas to do your shopping in Hong Kong we were told. To our surprise (and luckily for Larry), it wasn't a market just for "ladies" though! It had everything....from handbags, to watches, to clothes, to shoes, to DVDs, to luggage, etc, etc. We bought a few things, but we only got a small taste of this market on our first day because, only after a couple of hours, we headed to Hong Kong Disneyland for the rest of the day. Our friend (and one of the other Ariels from my Tokyo Disneyland contract), Elizabeth,
now works at the Disneyland here in Hong Kong, and so we went to see her. As you can see from the pictures, she hung up her red wig for a blonde one this time around....as she now is Alice from 'Alice in Wonderland!' Isn't she lovely?
After taking a spin on the teacups (**Note to self: NEVER ride the teacups with Larry) and some other rides & attractions, taking some pictures, and seeing a few shows, we left Disney to have dinner. We went to the Disneyland Hotel and had the BEST buffet we've ever had (seriously!) at the Enchanted Garden. Not only was the food DELICIOUS, but they had an enormous array of food from practically every country in the world...including 2 chocolate fountains from our favorite country - fatty America!! (haha!) It was fun taking pictures with all the characters as we stuffed our faces too!!
Day 2: Our next day in Hong Kong we filled to the brim with two tours - one during the day, and one at night. During the day we did a "Deluxe Hong Kong Island" tour, where we got to see a variety of unique things that Hong Kong
has to offer. We began the tour with a quick stop at Man Mo Temple, a temple built in 1847 that was dedicated to the gods of literature and martial arts. It had incense burning from the ceiling and was different from many of the other temples we've visited in the past, mainly because we were told that students still come to this temple today for its legend. Inside there is a brass calligraphy brush that, if rubbed before a test, it is said to bring academic luck.
After Man Mo Temple, we headed up to Victoria Peak where we did a little shopping and saw some amazing views of the city down below us. It was kind of scary how we got up there....we took the "World's steepest funicular railway" up the peak, which felt almost as if we were driving at an 180 degree angle straight up the mountain! Quite an experience! Once we came down, we headed to the Aberdeen Fishing Village where we rode a sampan (a Hong Kong fishing boat) around the harbour. It was all so very beautiful.
Next we had a dim-sum lunch with the group overlooking Repulse Bay (one of
Hong Kong's most beautiful beaches), before heading to Stanley Market...another very popular place for shopping in Hong Kong. Since this was the last stop on the tour, we decided to turn down our ride back to the hotel an hour later, so that we could stay in Stanley Market longer and keep shopping. We couldn't walk away...!! 😊
Our next tour was later in the evening, after the sun had set. We went out on a harbour cruise for a couple hours where we could get the best view for Hong Kong's world famous light show....every night at 8pm! On the cruise we had access to an open bar and snacks while we watched the show. We also met a really sweet couple from England on our boat! Afterwards we met up with Elizabeth again for dinner and drinks in Lan Kwai Fong - Hong Kong's best nightlife!!
Day 3: Three words for this day: SHOPPING, SHOPPING, SHOPPING! We shopped high and low, for ourselves and for our families. We shopped in just about every market imaginable in Hong Kong for about 9 hours straight!! We gave a whole new meaning to the phrase, "Shop til you drop!"
We even had to buy another suitcase at one of the markets just to get everything home that we had bought!! It wasn't until about 10pm that we finally headed to the airport to catch our flight back to Seoul. We arrived back in Korea at about 5am, and slept a few hours before we had to go to work that day. Pretty exhausting, but I'd do it all over again in a second!!
We hope you enjoyed reading about our little trip to H.K.
Love,
Melanie & Larry
Chinese for the Day: "Zhege duoshao qian?" - How much does it cost? (A phrase we should have learned pretty easily if everyone didn't already speak English!) 😊

cheap clothes
If the new designer clothes are so cheap in Hong Kong, are the clothes at the Salvation Army free?
