International travel has always been a game of give and take; a practice of tolerating in order to enjoy; and the art of sacrificing a bit in order to feed that internal hunger for adventure. I had accepted there would always be tedious, long expensive flights from where I lived—in the middle of a huge country—in order to see the world. I knew it would often take me an extra day to get somewhere and that added time would equate to added costs. I knew I would sacrifice sleep and leg room and comfort, but I also knew that once I got through that long slog, I would be knee-deep in the unequivocal bliss of adventure travel. Those are the things I knew. I accepted them. I tolerated them. I worked with the hand I had ... read more

There is always one constant about international travel: in one way or another you have a mirror held up to your face and you learn something about yourself. It can be overt, it can be subtle, it can be difficult, it can be frivolous, it can lead to big life changes. I suppose it most likely depends on how willing you are to see the image in the mirror and what the reflection tells you. In a very light-hearted, yet jaw dropping moment recently in Georgia, Kyle learned a little something about himself. What he is to do with the information, I do not know. What will I do with my observation? Think about it when I need a little chuckle to myself. As a matter of course, travel has changed these days because we are ... read more

We had a five hour drive ahead of us in eastern Georgia when we left Borjomi and headed to Stepantsminda in Kazbeghi. The first few hours of driving were to simply retrace our journey from Tbilisi as it seems everything travels through the capital city, even major highways. Not long after we passed Tbilisi and took our journey north, our driver pulled into a lookout point near the Georgian village of Pasanauri along Georgian Military Road. With little to no mutual language, we determined he wanted us to look at the point where two rivers meet and I am glad we took the moment as it is not everyday you see two different colored rivers merge and travel together maintaining their different colors. One river is light gray and the other a darker shade of gray. ... read more

In the Midwest, we say if you don’t like the weather, just wait an hour because it changes so quickly. I think the similar could be said about the topography of Georgia. If you don’t like the view, drive an hour and you can see an entirely different scene. We tested this theory and drove from the river and mountain landscape of Borjomi to the intense mountains of the Kazbeghi Region in northern Georgia. We passed by emerald lakes and stately monasteries, followed rivers and their tributaries, watched as Georgian farmers harvested wheat, orchard grass and honey and enjoyed as they shepherded their herds of cattle and sheep high into the mountains. We traveled through the rapidly growing ski towns and watched as sky divers took advantage of the heights. We took sharp hairpin turns and ... read more

When a town boasts healing waters, a mountain atmosphere and a long history of being the playground for royalty, you add it to the itinerary. After all, if it is good enough for Russian Tsars, it‘s probably good enough for us. We left the hipster, big city feel of Tbilisi and traveled a little more than two hours through fertile agricultural valleys and into the mountain village of Borjomi. A small town of only 16,000 people, Borjomi has a big reputation as the water bottling capital of Georgia and is home to baths built in the 1st century AD. Home to over 150 springs, Borjomi is where families go to relax and soak, literally. As we continue to grapple with how to properly describe Georgia based on his geography and history, Borjomi is one of those ... read more

Visiting Stepantsminda means the obligatory visit to the Gergeti Trinity Church. It sits atop a mountain and stares down at anyone passing through the tiny town. While in the Khevi province, we spent our mornings, afternoons and evenings admiring it from afar as it caught the sunlight and hid behind the clouds. It only seemed fitting we make the trek to the top of the mountain to get a closer look. The Gergeti Trinity Church sits at an elevation of 2170 km on the right bank of Chkheri under Mount Kazbek, one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus Mountains. It was built in the 14th century and is still an active Georgian Orthodox and Apostolic Church. It is no surprise it was shut down briefly by the Russians, but it never lost it’s appeal. It ... read more

I packed an extra bag. A duffle of sorts that folds down to nothing, but is roomy enough to bring home souvenirs, Georgian originals and the bounty of all my holiday shopping. Thus far into my Georgian adventure, the bag remains folded up in the corner of my suitcase. It looks sad and useless at this point. That is the bad news. The good news, my pocketbook has been unaffected by Georgian gift shops or boutiques. I am not ready to wave the white flag on Georgian finds just yet, but at this point my hope is not high. The souvenir shops are filled with the sort of kitsch that would please traveling Grandma’s and cruise ship travelers. The high end fashion boutiques are not abundant and I am certainly not within their target audience age ... read more

Rarely would I ever top a city’s must see list with a hotel, but the Stamba Hotel is more than just a hotel. It is a place to eat, drink, sleep, shop and marvel. At every turn, there is a new and interesting vignette, an aesthetic feast and a stop in your tracks wonder. It might actually cause stimulation overload, but at the same time you can’t get enough. Once a large publishing house, the warehouse building is now a boutique hotel that feels more like a living, breathing art gallery. The rooms seem like upscale loft apartments sprinkled with unexpected, decadent fixtures, like gold plated free standing bath tubs in the middle of the room or on the balcony. In a nod toward the building’s history, the walls of the rooms, the bar and the ... read more

As Willie Nelson’s version of the old timey song Georgia on my Mind plays on repeat in my head ever since booking this vacation, I can’t help but accept I really don’t know much about The Republic of Georgia and I am guessing I’m not alone. We all know Georgia exists, but what else do we really remember from history class or geography lessons? For starters, the song annoyingly invading my brain has nothing to do about with this little country at all. The song is about the American state, not surprisingly. Right out of the starting gate, there is a bit of an identity crisis with Georgia. Am I in Europe? Asia? Eurasia? The correct answer is, Georgia is located in the Caucasus Region; essentially at the intersection of Eastern Europe and Asia. Formerly a ... read more

I’m a planner. I’m a plotter, I’m an organizer and I’m a dreamer. I can be a bit of a romantic, an adventurer and an information seeker. I know all of these dimensions about myself because of travel. I have learned I have an insatiable appetite for information when I am planning a trip. I have learned that I want to plan and plan and plan, but I don’t want to create a rigid travel itinerary. I want to lay out an old fashioned paper map and I want to trace routes. I want a trip that lands somewhere between overly scheduled and do whatever whenever the spirit moves me. I want to see everything, but I also want long, leisurely moments where I simply watch the world go by before my eyes. These are the ... read more
