After passing our 1 1/2 month marker of our time here in Shanghai, Ollie and I were really looking forward to getting out of Shanghai to experience a different part of China. We've definitely settled into life here now - we're comfortable with our surroundings and with our routines. We have our favourite restaurants, favourite things to do, and also have our least favourite things about life her... Read Full Entry

CCTV
just FYI, there are actually over 100 channels (CCTV has only 8 or 9 channels) available for the Chinese audiences. It is just another misconception that Chinese can only watch programs from the 'state-run' Medias. yes, most of the stations are owned either by the central government or provincial governments. But there are still a lot of stations/Medias that are privately owned. Especially in the south, say Guangdong province, ppl have unrestricted access to the free Hong Kong TV programs over the air.

celebrity
the staring thing is really interesting. As China opened up for the west only some decades ago, most ppl in China have never seen a foreigner. This is even more so in small cities like Ningbo. I am glad you guys take it easily and didn't get offended. I gave you credit on that. You can call that a culture difference, curiosity or whatever, it's just something you will have to get used to. Just keep in mind, they mean no harm--you are being 'stared' at as celebrities, but you are treated as celebrities at same time.

Staring
While some of the staring is harmless, there are other times in Ningbo it is not--let's be fair. While not everyone treats foreigners bad, yells at them, is blatantly rude, refuses to listen to them, etc, etc...it does happen--daily. I've been repeatedly shoved by a kid, with onlooking parents, doing nothing about it and giggling. I have also been called "white devil" by a school kid, family again, aware. Life can be uncomfortable here. People who treat people a certain way know they are making life uncomfortable. Do I get it? Yes. Do I enjoy it. No. Does it happen a lot? Yes.
