Trekking In Banna

This is not very accurate since the map doesn't show detail.

3 day trek in Dai and Aini Villages.
Warning: Photos of dog meat in the Market on this web page.

Day one: We started a hike on November 28th with a guide from Jinghong named Sarah. We hiked in the mountains above the Mekong River. We started our hike on a dirt road and everything looked very cultivated. All the mountainsides were farmed. We walked past footlong worms, butterflies, caterpillars and water buffalo. We stopped at a small village with 27 families in it. For awhile everyone stared at us. It was a Dai village. Our guide took us to a hut on stilts were we were going to eat dinner and sleep. After dinner we explored the village. Natalie made a baby cry by looking at it. Back at the hut, they rolled out futons for us to sleep on, but they didn't help much and we slept on the hard floor. There was a party going on in the hut next door and they were very loud until late at night.

Day 2: We hiked from the Dai village down to the Mekong River. We passed men with homemade rifles that were out hunting. A lot of the land was being farmed and lots of rubber

trees were planted on the steep hillsides. We hiked through a jungle and had to wade in the stream. I didn't get any leeches on me because I wore long pants and bug repellant. That night we stayed in an Aini village. The hut we stayed in was on stilts and the animals lived below it. The pigs kept getting in fights under the hut. All of the huts had electricity and TVs. The families cooked over a wood fire, but they also had cell phones. Some of the huts had solar hot water heaters. Our family was very loud and talkative until late at night. One of the men had gotten drunk and crashed his motorcycle on the way home. Finally it got quiet until the roosters started crowing in the morning.

Day 3: We got up and started on our last day. We hiked through very steep pineapple farms. When we got to the bottom of the mountain, a farmer gave us some pineapples to eat. We got in the back of a tractor/truck and rode on drove on a bumpy road back to where we started. We got in another mini van and went back to

Internet Cafes: The internet cafes in China are very strange. They are very smoke filled and a lot of school kids go there to play chinese internet games. Each computer has a headphone, a camera and a big grubby screen. For one hour you pay only 2 yuan, which is aquivelent to $ .25. A lot of times I see grown men going in to play Grand Theft Auto. The kids that go there are obsessively addicted to internet, just like me. They stare at a screen not even noticing the smoke in the room. I feel right at home.
