September is a good time to visit northern China. Many of the nomadic ethnic groups were in the process of packing up their yurts and moving with their livestock from summer pastures to the towns for winter.

Fantastic coloured rocks which rolled onto the horizon.

This oasis town is situated in a depression, second only to the Dead Sea. Incredibly hot summer temperatures which produce great chillies, seen here drying in front of a cement factory!

This is the biggest wind farm in China. It seemed to go on forever.

This UNESCO preserved Han Dynasty city was one of our favourite stopovers.

Looking down the main street of this UNESCO listed World Heritage site towards the Drum Tower.

We stayed in a traditional courtyard hotel which was very spread out so easy to lose your way!

There is still a huge group of archaeologists recovering these amazing figures.

The evening market is a must see experience. Great selection of street stall food and handcrafts.

A dramatic landscape of rocky spires and water. This was a backdrop to some remarkable rock carvings.

The walk up to the caves and carvings was very impressive.
