Finally, a low key day and how I needed it. Another low key tomorrow which I am sure that I will need for the events that are upcoming.
The 3G Internet is quite slow at the apartment we are staying but I discovered later, it works much better in Chengdu than here in Shaungliu. Much of the morning is spent on typing up the events from the day before and uploading pictures which takes forever and the connections dropped several times but it finally finishes. We had breakfast and lunch already purchased from the previous day so we didn't have to go anywhere or do anything until 2:00 in the afternoon. I think even Lisa appreciated the ability to be lazy. Revelations that the reason she didn't bother translating much of anything for me is that it is hard for her and takes a lot of energy. I understand and I think she understands now why I fail to have any interest in looking at sites where there is no English for me to understand what I am seeing.
So we head into town in the afternoon and there are 3 basic objectives...pick up the first photos and photo
it's hard to give a picture
of the courtyard itself but the house is smack dab in the middle of town, next to the Music School. Things are packed quite tightly so to have the luxury of a courtyard is a really great thing. cd's (but they haven't been mangled with Photoshop yet), go to the Chengdu market to get some Sichuan peppers for Lisa's mother and eat dinner with the family before we leave tomorrow night because we are not going back into Chengdu again.
The pictures come back and some of them are quite impressive and then some are of me and they clearly show the wear of the long flight and not enough sleep. I hope they can fix this with Photoshop but I'm wondering if the Chinese technicians have any appreciation for American eyes and removing the heavy bags under mine but there's little I can do about this. Lisa has chosen a number of photos to be put into books, there are a number of large size posterized prints, a few prints for us very slickly mounted and it all is quite impressive with the 2 books (one with 20 pictures and one with 24 pictures)...the total price tag is 5,000 yuan (about $730). There is no way you could get this done in America for under $2000 but Lisa keeps trying to impress upon me that this is Chinese money and it probably is relatively the same
considering Chinese wages and I surely can't argue with her logic.
I think the gimmicky thing is the cheese cake shots and it's clear that this drives far more of their business than the 'wedding photos' themselves. The thing I don't understand about Chinese wedding photos is that they are never taken at the weddings. The cheese cake shots are obvious...this is a big stretch for Chinese women as they really don't show much of the skin on the street. Their public persona is quite conservative. I wouldn't know about their private behavior because I really only know one Chinese woman and it would be unfair to draw any conclusions. Anyway, I am going to include a few pictures here because they have occupied much of our time and energy this week and they are outstanding (and of course, don't include me).
I was occupied much of the afternoon with collecting and uploading the photos because Wang Jian wanted her daughter to have a copy of them and since dinner was rapidly approaching, I skipped the trip to the market which I did want to make. Chinese markets are incredible. Again dinner was incredible...I have eaten so well
in Chengdu it will be hard to leave and Lisa has already warned me that the food in Qinhuangdao does not compare. But Qinhuangdao is costal China and I am sure that there is a lot of seafood to be had. I remarked that it was obvious to me that her second family does not eat like this every day but is going over the top because we are there and she agreed. I am now very well tuned in to Sichuan foods and I know I am going to miss this myself.
We return home at the typical 10:00, somewhat tired but there is the daily laundry which is a curious habit but they have small washing machines and no clothes dryers and thus everything is washed at the end of the day and hung to dry. Of course when I get back to America, I will resume my once a month cycle of laundry because I have strategically planned my shirts, pants and underwear to last a month.
Tomorrow, our last day in Shaungliu (Chengdu) and back to Beijing late where we will stay overnight before heading to Qinhuangdao on Saturday.

Life in China
An amazing adventure and well told. Much better than any travel show I have seen on television. You make China seem much closer. I would enjoy the museums, especially the cloisonnè and ceramics. My favorite period for ceramics would be the Song Dynasty. If there, I would be tempted to round up Lisa's extended family and start digging at the first emperor's tomb.
