The Future
Pudong looks really futuristic We awoke to a beautiful and warm sunny day in Shanghai. After our first- and last- attempt at the hotel’s breakfast, we headed out to the French Concession to follow a walking tour laid out in our guidebook which encompassed all the major sites.
The walking route was kind of difficult to follow and we found that we had ended up walking by the major points of interest before we had even realized it. Oh well. It was still a great day for a walk and we stopped in a small café for a snack and coffee, and went to a bakery to pick up treats for the following day.
We took the subway back to the Bund area and continuously got lost. I usually have a very good sense of direction, so I have no idea how we kept walking in the exact opposite direction from where we intended to go. We walked…and walked…and walked. Saw a lot of Shanghai! We managed to find a great all you can eat dumpling restaurant in a shopping complex. The staff was more than happy to serve us, fawning over us and practicing their English and pointing out things to eat
French Concession
Tree-lined streets of the French Concession and even ordering for us because they thought we would like something. It was a lot of fun and everyone we have encountered has been friendly.
We were surprised by the lack of English though in Shanghai. We thought it would be much more widespread than in Beijing, due to the foreign concessions and the international banking connections.
For dinner we went in search of a Middle Eastern restaurant, but finding ourselves lost once again, we stumbled upon a recommended dumpling restaurant we saw online. The food was good, and the portions were huge, and again, dirt cheap. The food has only been excellent on this entire trip!
