So last night I went out with a group of USACers for dinner and a night of festivities. One of the guys from fall semester took us around and we decided to be "economical" and eat at a local restaurant on the street. My first impression was "damn that place looks dirty". I was a bit hesitant to even eat there because my number one fear is getting massive diarrhea. In short, when I traveled to Spain we ate out in the cuts and I ended up losing 6 lbs...the rest is self-explanatory. We ordered some random dishes, but the best was the xiaolongbao. In fact, we ended up eating lunch there today. After dinner, we decided to go to a lounge in People's Square called Barbarosa. Before we left for Barbarosa, we made sure that everyone had a beer to take with them. It was unusual but exciting to be able to walk the streets and ride the metro with a 600ml bottle of Tsingtao. We took the metro and everyone was staring at us because we were walking around and drinking booze at the same time. Barbarosa had more of a Western atmosphere with a lot of foreigners....nothing crazy.
The manager Ali hooked us up and we did not have to pay cover charge and he gave us a nice table. All cocktails and martinis were cut down from 70 kuai to 40 kuai. I did not know what to order, so I ordered this bitch drink called Momo Mango. It was really good, but definitely not a man's drink. From what I remember, it had vodka, lime juice, and some mango stuff. Next I ordered a Whiskey Sour, which was pretty good. Ali came around and gave us free shots of some drink he made....they were really good. Barbarosa had more of a relaxing atmosphere, so we decided to go to a sports bar called Windows. Windows was very diverse and had a lot of Europeans. Tonight we plan on getting massages and possibly hitting up a techno club near Windows.
Today we had a scavenger hunt to teach us how to use the metro. Since most of us used the metro the night before, we did not take the scavenger hunt very seriously. My group's mission was to go to Xujiahui. Turns out there is a Best Buy there. When I saw that I was thinking
"shit...i left my gift cards at home". After Xujiahui, we ate lunch and I had to buy some slippers, a blanket, and a cell phone. We went to a place called RT mart which is basically Costco on steroids with no membership. You can buy ANYTHING you want there. Anything you need...they will have it. It's funny because our whole group has the same phone. I bought mine with 2 other guys so we got 3 phones for 600 kuai. After today I realized that I need to learn some phrases about food, buying things, and possibly starting small talk, because I have been in those situations numerous times for the past 3 days and could not do anything about it except say wo tingbudong (I do not understand). Surprisingly I've been told that you'll learn the most in bars and massage parlors HAHAHA. I really enjoy being in a big city because there's so much life and energy...especially in Shanghai. Shanghai definitely blows San Francisco and New York City out of the water!!!
