After a failed attempt to see the big museum (the line was at least two hours long) my friend and I decided to visit a quiet temple instead. We were not disappointed.
Outside the city wall, and away from the tourist throngs, is the Temple of the Eight Immortals. It's still in use, with monks wandering in and out of the courtyards. We sat, enjoying the peace--we agreed that sometimes it's hard to find that in China. The temple seemed to hold secrets around each corner, whether it be a detailed carving, stone mosaic, or a tucked-away garden.
We spent a few hours at the temple, taking in its beauty and enjoying a bit of warm October sunshine.
