Zhangjiakou- La Segundo Muralla China-26 Junio- Dia 6
Sunrise woke us up at 5am. I decided to walk through a small section of the great wall and to my surprise I started to notice that some of the bricks had holes and ledges, making them surprisingly amazing to grab. Immediately I ran back the the campsite to grab my pair of climbing shoes. And we'll let's just say I spend some time climbing after that.
Since the smoke was still around, affecting the views, we decided to move to a new location. We where going to look for the beautiful blue sky's which we missed dearly. A couple of buses took us all the way to Zhangjiakou. We arrived at dark and went to look for something good to eat for dinner. After a couple of delicious beers (you can literally buy half a liter of beer for only 1 canadian dollar!!) and some delicious grilled meat we where off to find a campingspot. The idea was again to camp on the great wall of china, so we took an UBER to the entrance of the park. As we where getting off the car another strange Chinese guy approached us jajaja.
And he gave us all the advice we needed to know in order to camp on the great wall. He actually took us to the locked gate and motivated us to jump over it. At this point the friendliness was too unreal to believe, which made us doubt the situation. Leonardo had this strange thought that the person purposely made us jump the fence in order to call the cops and get us arrested ? As we walked up the hill I did start feeling a bit uneasy since there where night cameras everywhere!!!
We finally did find a place to sleep at around 1am, placing an alarm at 6am to wake up before the crowd of turists came into the park.
Zhangjiakou -> Grasslands of Zhanbei - 27 Julio- Dia 7
I woke up at 5:30am to the sound of an army saluting and marching. Panicked I woke Bean and Leonardo up and we immediately started packing everything up. Our plan was to make it seem as if we had not been sleeping... we had just complited an early hike to watch the sunrise. ?
With the shouting and marching still going on we snuck out without being seen jajaja. As we walked out we had amazing deserted mountain views and we managed to relax again. We never saw who was marching and shouting, but we made the conclusion that it most probably was a Chinese citizen doing their Morning Rituals nearby our campingspot.
Back in the town of Zhangjiakou we walked down the market street with every single person watching us closely and sometimes taking a few pictures! It felt as if the people in the town had never seen someone like us before. After making another humble friendship we where recommended to this noodle restaurant which we excitedly went to. The noodles where so good that from this day onward one of our daily meals consisted of it. We took advantage of the restaurant to wash our clothes. The people in the restaurant where so happy with our company they did not even charge us for our meal! I really liked this town a lot! Highly recommend it
From Zhangjiakou we hitchhiked all the way to the Heaven Road which crosses through the grasslands. We where dropped off in the middle of nowhere and we just started to walk through the grassy plains. This grasslands where mostly crop fields with amazing puffy white clouds above them. And there where sooo many wind mills generating renewable enegy! They where just everywhere...left, right, in front and behind you. We kept on walking through the plains visiting nearby towns, even managed to get a ride on a small tractor 😊
We ended up hitchhiking the last few kilometers to a large town called Zhanbei. Our plan was to pass through the town and head a bit farther north where hopefully we would find the infinite grasslands with no human occupation. As we passed through the city we again noticed everyone staring at us and taking there cellphones out to take pictures. The girls always giggling when me and Leo greeted them with a "Nihao".
We realized that the grasslands where still pretty far north from the city so we managed to hitch another ride.
Being dropped off in a fenced property in the grasslands, we finally where standing in infinite grasslands but it was much more populated then our liking. We where introduced to the people living in the property, Mongols which lived in yurts and made money from raising, training and racing horses. Pretty cool experience. We finally set up our tent and went to bed.
