cooking our food...
pete about to take a big mouthful of slimy stomach... I haven't had a blog for a couple of days now, so il try to fill you guys in on everything that's happened so far... the day before yesterday we did some admin in the morning...generally just trying to pay for accommodation and shizzle, and then, because Hannah had to wait in halls for the Internet man to come (he does the Internet, you see...) Pete and I decided to go for a cheeky lunch in a restaurant just over the road from beimen (north gate). We didn't really know what to expect, but we'd been told that the nicer restaurants were off to the left, feeling like we deserved a treat, we headed over there.
After looking for a while we came upon quite a busy restaurant with pots on every table bubbling away and letting out some incredible aromas, we got a table and tried to look around and work out what exactly it was that we were meant to do. After a while it became apparent that we weren't going to be served at the table, so we walked up to the counter to see an incredible array of weird and wonderful dishes laid out. We chose
Restaurant times!
Our places at the crazy restaurant!!! prawns, some slightly spiky, rubbery black meat strips that looked interesting (after the meat we found out that this was oxen stomach, some mushrooms, and some dumplingish looking lumps with black bits in them. We then were led to another counter where there were a selection of pots with what looked like leftovers in the bottom of them. We were told to choose one each and the waiter promptly filled each of our pots up with some cloudy looking water. He then took our pots to our tables, turned on the hot plates that were directly in front of us, and left. It suddenly occurred to me that maybe we were meant to be cooking these things ourselves...
Now I wouldn't go as far as to say that my cooking is terrible...but I'm not the most culinary talented, and combined with the fact that neither of us had any idea how long to cook these things for...there was never much chance of this turning out all that well. It was a brilliant experience...and somehow we haven't got food poisoning from it (yet...) but next time it might be a good idea to bring some Chinese students who can help

so many fake dvds...all at 10 kuai for about 15 dvds... madness! us work out what's going on exactly... The whole meal cost us about £4 altogether...
That night we went to a different restaurant nearby which is quite well known for it's noodles, it was really smart and we all had crazy noodle dishes, which was fun! After hearing all about baijiu, we figured that we had to at least try it out...so ended up getting a small bottle from a little corner shop for about 33p. We tried to decipher the label, but there really wasn't much there..all we did see was that this stuff was 56% which seems a 'lil bit extreme. And, after trying it, I can safely say that it's really not very nice, for some reason it tastes slightly of fish...which, combined with the taste of paint stripper...
The next day we had to take our tests to see what class we were in, which was quite entertaining, we pretty much just had to sit in a room, we were free to chat, and then when it was finished, or we decided that we'd had enough, we told them what class we wanted to be in, and the signed off our papers...without even looking
tuktuks!!!
crazy women drivers and a lot of near misses...giggles at the answers we'd put!
That evening we went to nanmen(south gate) to get some food in the evening...I'd already had dinner, but there were a few market stalls so it was quite cool to see the different stalls and just wander around. We finally found a little street food place and ordered 2 bowls of stuff (not really sure what was in them) and a couple of huge bottles of Tsingtao to share between all 5 of us... The bowls of food were hilarious, they had fishy stuff, chickens feet, which were horribly gristly and not all that nice, and loads of different vegetables, which were also quite dodgy... The meals cost 40p each and the bottles of beer were 50p, everything is just so cheap here, it's unbelievable!!!
To get home we decided to get tuktuks which were hilarious, we had the girls versus the boys and raced them back to beimen... Hopefully the video will work, but they did some quite interesting driving...
Right...gonna chat to people now, as I finally have Internet...so can use Skype!!!
