OUR STUDENTS
Haikou Municipal Educational Research & Training Academy Have just finished two weeks of teaching conversational English at the Haikou Municipal Educational Research & Training Academy. This is our fourth year teaching with Global Volunteers & the most fun. Our team of 17 bonded quickly & the laughter & companionship developed quickly! Each morning we boarded the bus at 8AM & returned to the hotel by noon for lunch.
Roy & I shared a class, consisting of 9 students, all Chinese English teachers. They were eager to increase their ability to speak conversational English. Teachers teach their English class 'from the book'. Once out of the university, they do not have much opportunity to speak conversational English. Day of our final class, the Academy gave a closing ceremony & each class sang songs........ours sang 'WELCOME TO ISLAND OF HAINAN' & dressed in native Hainan Island shirts --Roy & I also wore same shirts!
We also taught Hainan Overseas Chinese Middle School near Holiday Beach. We drove along the beach to get to the school. Many small sailboats were racing along with wind surfers. The school originally was built in the southeastern quandrant of China, Yunnan Province, during the time of the Japanese invasion. Chinese, who left China
OUR CLASS
Dressed in Hainan Island shirts & singing, 'Welcome to Hainan Island'! & went to live in foreign countries, sent their children to this school so they could continue with their studies on the mainland. The school relocated in Hainan eventually & the facility we taught in was 2 years old. The students were above average & had to pass difficult tests to be considered. We were very impressed with the students; the school hosted a lovely barbeque dinner for us at the Hainan Yacht Club. They begin classes at 8 am to noon. They start up again at 2 pm - 6pm; then again at 7 pm - 9 pm, 6 days a week!!!!! We also taught at Haikou #4 Middle School & Haikou High School.
The volunteers were treated to sumptuous meals! The Academy, where we taught, hosted two lovely dinners.......& the Overseas School as well. I've posted a few photos from each event.
