Korean Philharmonic Orchestra in Guilin
On June 6th, my wife and I went to a concert held at the Prince's Palace in Guilin. The Prince's palace besides being an imperial palace of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, is also home to a section of Guilin's Guangxi Normal University. In one of the main buildings is a theatre, and it often hosts plays, operas, and concerts of students as well as national and international performers.
The concert we went to was the Korean Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra. They are the city of Jizhou's city orchestra. Korea's Jizhou city is a sister city of Guilin and they often have exchanges in the arts. I enjoyed it immensely. My mother teaches orchestra in the United States, and so I have always had a soft spot in my heart for classical music. I went not knowing what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. The orchestra was very good.
The orchestra performed five pieces including Chinese, Korean, and Western composed pieces.
Seong-Hwan Choi Korean folk song "Arirang"
Gershwin "Piano Concerto in F Major"
Mozart "Voilin Concerto No. 5 in A Major K219"
Sibelius "Symphony No. 1 in E minor, The Jeju Philharmonic Orchestra
The orchestra plays the first piece, a korean folk song. Op.39
Encore Chinese song "Jasmine Flower"
My wife had never been to an orchestra concert before and really enjoyed it. It was very nice to spend an afternoon enjoying a bit of Korean/Western culture in Guilin.
