The present residents of Xiahe consist of about 45% Tibetans, 45% Han Chinese and 10% Hui Muslim, providing an interesting mix. One painting can take weeks to months to complete, depending on the size and detail.

Starting early

Children start as young as 8 years old to learn the basics of the sacred drawings. When first learning they just trace the templates, then they learn to recreate the drawings by hand using pencils. Learning to paint the thangkas is the last step. Then of course, it's practice, practice, practice!

This huge expanse of concrete is the new "town plaza" and is located at the Chinese end of town. The central fountain was not in action when I visited but features 2 sacred symbols of Buddhism, the conch shell and the twin fish.
