Start date 30th September 2008
D day finally arrived and suddenly we were waiting at Heathrow with our bags packed;
Approx...
2 T-shirts
7 pairs of pants
2 bras
2 pairs of trousers
2 sarongs
soap bags
party top (only 1!)
and the largest medical kit you can imagine...travel nurse Jo and Pharmacist Hilary really went to town with protection.
And ipod (thankfully because the bus journeys were very, very long)
Bangkok was hectic, topped by seeing a baby elephant running down the side of dual carriageway!
So, Cambodia...
The roads are pretty bumpy, our bums have been numb for many of the journeys. As if that were not enough to stop our shut eye between destinations, the drivers beep ALL the time. Lucy has had a few moments of nearly wetting her pants with fright (not that good when you only have 7 pairs! There are laundry service at the hostels and guest houses, so they are getting washed every now and again!!)
The countryside is amazing, really lush, beautiful and diverse. We have rumbled through and stayed in some hectic places and some very laid back ones but the people are generally the same-really friendly
despite the poverty and their quite recent horrific history.
We have;
Seen the temples of Ankor- Awe inspiring and extremely hot.
Stayed with a Cambodian family in a house on stilts, on a roll out mattress inside a mosquito net (Whilst visiting the tin shack of a toilet-very clean- Rach settled to squat and then realised that there was a rather large tarantula watching her, needless to say it was a very quick visit!)
Chilled out on the beautiful beaches on the islands around south east coast and travelled there by a boat powered by a lawn mower engine! When there we snorkelled and fished (using squid, line and plastic bottles!) and on the way home went through a massive thunderstorm-we were a little nervous about this part of the boat trip.
Been moved and shocked by the genocide museum (S-21) and killing fields of Phnom Penh. Which highlighted the horrific tales from the Khmer Rouge rule, which only ended 30 years ago.
Cambodia has been an amazing start to our adventure. We had a great group for our trip and our Cambodian trip leader called 'Jay' (nickname because his real name was too complicated
for our clumsy tongues) was hilarious and a wicked guide.
Next stop Vietnam...
