Today was Angkor day and we knew it was going to be a long but fun day.
We woke up really early as we were meeting everyone in the hotel lobby at 7:00am. Our tour guide told us that we needed to get to Angkor Wat as soon as it opens as it gets crowded quickly. They took us to the east gate as it was not crowded. We walked past the mote that surrounds Angkor Wat and then proceeded down a long tree lined path and then Angkor Wat suddenly appeared. It really is an impressive site and our tour guide did a great job of taking us to through the east gate as the sun was behind us and shinning on the buildings.
We took a group photo and then got in line to climb to the top. There are three levels and you have to climb the steepest stairs I've ever seen, but it was definitely well worth it. The views were amazing. It was very crowded and there were thousands of people by the time we climbed down and walked around the buildings.
Our group then headed to Angkor Tom and by this time
it was really starting to get extremely hot and there was absolutely no wind. Angkor Tom is not as big but it was an interesting place.
Since it was now the peak heat of the day we headed back to the hotel where we had a couple of hours to relax until our next excursion. Drury and I decided to cool off and head our to the hotel pool. We also had a few mojitos as well.
At 4:00pm we set out to go to the Jungle Wat that was made famous by the movie Tomb Raider. This is the Wat that has all of the trees growing around it. When we arrived we found out that an excavation team from India are in the process of restoring the Wat and our reconstructing part of it and in doing so have to cut down some of the trees. Several of us were concerned about this as many people visit to see the trees growing around the buildings. Our guide said that they are trying to preserve as much as they can without cutting down the trees, but want to restore the temple as best they can.
Our
group headed back to Angkor Wat to watch the sunset. While we were there our guide gave us some water buffalo jerky as well as some dried snake to eat. The water buffalo jerky tasted like hair, but the dried snake was actually pretty good. Guess I can also mark eating snake off my bucket list as well.
Drury and I then met Margo for dinner at FCC and had a great dinner where I had a delicious plate of fish & chips.
We then headed to Pup Street which is a block of a lot of bars and people watching. After a couple of drinks we went back to the hotel as it had been a very long day.
I have a lot of pictures of our adventures today as Visiting Angkor Wat was one of the biggest highlights of the trip and now we both get to check this off of our bucket list.
