Phnom Penh

The journey was definitely one to remember! jammed into a bus with almost 3 people per seat for hours! aahh!!! First impressions, not good. Really dislike how you aren't able to breathe or even think when you get out of the bus in the city. We didn't know where to go so we followed a couple to Sunset Guesthouse. The room was cheap and there was free internet but they people were strange. We decided to stay only 2 nights. Just outside the center of the city we visited an orphanage called The Lighthouse Orphanage, taking with us some 2nd hand books and fruit. The children were so happy to see us, visitors can drop in at any time and are always welcome. There are around 100 children ranging from 2 to 18 and the buildings have been donated by previous visitors. After a couple of hours we headed to the Killing Fields. I wasn't sure about visiting but we were told it was worth seeing. I'm not really into dark tourism so found it a little strange. I was shocked to learn how recent the killings were which made it even worse. Still not sure if I'm

glad I went. Over the 2 nights we tested some of LonelyPlanets' food guide recommendations, Happy Pizza doesn't only sell happy pizzas so that worked for me 😊 After cutting our stay in the capital short, we decided to head to the coast for a couple of days. The bus journey was about 6 hours and cost approx. $10.

Best (and worst) of Phnom Penh:

• Learning about the history of Cambodia.
• The orphanage, really makes you appreciate what you have.
• The Mexican food in town, tasted good although not really Mexican 😊
