Day 25
Up at 7 packed ready for internal flight to Siem Reap. Breakfast, then 30 mins taxi to airport. Glided through and sought out the costa coffee. My bag weighs 17kg I came with 13 so I'm not doing bad and I do have many of Lesley's purchases in mine! The flight was pleasant and quick, 40 mins as a posed to a 5 hour bus journey. The views of the Mekong were great. There was a pick up service by the hotel. A jolly man held up a sign with Lesley's name on and whisked us to a tuk tuk. Were travelling with 2 back packs again now. Lesley can manage hers on one shoulder. Yesterday she used my travel bag strap as a sling which worked perfectly but today more improvements and she feels ok to go without.
The hotel is nice we have a balcony although not the great view that we had in Phnom Penh. Complimentary Nice cold drink in reception whilst they checked the room. Our Bags were delivered to the room and I got on and did our washing. Everyone is very friendly and smiley.
We took a walk into town. There
are pavements! In both Vietnam and Phnom Penh all the pavements have motorbikes parked on them so you are constantly walking on the road weaving in and out. Here the bikes and tuk Tuks are parked on the road. The place has a good feel about it. More laid back than Phnom Penh. We made a stop for tea and to organise our time here. Tomorrow we go to Angkor Wat. We're looking at going at 5am to catch the sun rise. Then Saturday we booked a cycling tour of villages and the countryside in the morning then a sunset cruise for late afternoon. Busy busy!
Haggling skills at the ready we do our final shopping. In Vietnam I bought a jade pendant. I'm now looking for the gold necklace to go with it. Once you start looking you don't get away. They tell you a price and hand you a calculator, you type in your price and it goes from there. If you are prepared to walk away they will come running after you for the sale and you'll get your price - easy! I bought my necklace and a few other things.
We headed for dinner. There
are so many places to choose from. We opted for local food. One was vegetable dried rice with pineapple serves in a pineapple. As we sat down the heavens opened. It rained most of the evening. We knew it was coming as it has been so hot 32 - then the wind comes and the lightening, then rain. A man sat at the table next to us and we started chatting. He was a volunteer in Cambodia, working for 3 months a year then back home to Adelaide. He told some wonderful tales of how his organisation has helped families- very inspiring. He advised us about when to go to Angkor Wat and rang his friend a tuk tuk driver and we arranged our pick up at 5am tomorrow. A quick tuk tuk drive back to the hotel then bed. Early start tomorrow. Should be a special day - looking forward to it.
