Wed 6th August We decided to travel south to Battambang from Siem Reap by boat. We bought tickets from a travel agent which cost US$15 each. We were told it would leave at 7am but a van would come to the hotel and take us to the pier. We waited until about 6.35am and there was still no sign of the van. The food here was actually pretty good.

The only bad thing about this place was the extraordinary number of flies here. They must have some cleanliness issues as we walked across the road to another restaurant, about 20 metres away and there were virtually no flies.

Legend has it that Ta Dambong found a magic stick and used it to usurp the King. He had a dream that a holy man on a white horse would come along to defeat him so he decided to put all the holy men to death. The King's son, now a monk, came riding into town on a white horse so Ta Dambong with his stick ran off never to be seen again. Battambang means "disappearing stick".

A hilltop temple 18km from Battambang. I think Chris almost fainted when our guide pointed out that this was the temple we were walking to.

This is the second way to get to the temple, a long, winding, gradual climb up.

This temple was used as an interrogation and execution centre by the Khmer Rouge.

You can still see the hooks in the ceiling which were used to torture victims.
