On the first few days, we only had fried rice, fried noodles and noodles soup. Where's authentic Burmese cuisine??

On the journey from Mandalay airport to our hotel, we were made to share taxi with a caucasian lady, Naomi from Canada. Had a casual chat with her and discussed about our favourite topic, FOOD. She said she writes cookbook, so she had special interest in the different types of cuisine. She recommended that we should try Too Too Restaurant in Mandalay, Monsoon and Feel Restaurant in Yangon. After settling in at Mandalay, our first thought was to try Too Too Restaurant. We thought it was a typical restaurant setting with menus and expected to see tourists there. However to our surprise, it was like economical rice stall, with lotsa cooked dishes at the counter. We went to the counter to order some dishes, fish curry, chicken curry, fried fish, sauteed mushroom and stirred fried potato shred. But when the food were brought to our table, we had 2 other plates of raw vegetables with dips, 3 bowls of lentil soup, ikan bilis & dried shrimp chilli paste and a big big bowl of rice. We digged in heartily and were

very contented with our first authentic Burmese food.

Unlike Vietnam and Thailand, we didn't get to snack much. When we were in Nyuang Shwe, we were happy to find roadside snacks, like vegetable fritters, Burmese "taco balls", shan noodles salad, fried tofu etc. We had a sumptuous lunch earlier where we fell in love with their tofu curry, hence we were exceptionally happy to find lotsa of fried tofu at the roadside stall. The deep fried golden stuff were so good esp with the chilli dips... drool. After all the yummy snacks, we stopped at another roadside stall for claypot spicy noodles. The noodles tasted like those Chinese "liang fen", and the soup tasted a bit like ma la soup. So nice to have hot spicy soup in cool weather in Nyuang Shwe.

We had toast and eggs everyday for breakfast. We finally got to try some local breakfast at Hotel Amazing in Nyuang Shwe, woohoo! We tried 3 different types
- Shan breakfast which comprise of mashed potato with beans, rice crisp and fried beancurd skin;
- Roadside breakfast which comprise of samosa, fried dough fritters with chickpeas and prata
- Myanmar breakfast which comprise of creamy soup noodles, glutinous rice and vegetable fritters.
Though something for a change, it was just good to try it once and we went back to simple toasts the following day :p

Traditionally, we will end the trip with a culinary highlight. This time, we had our dinner at Monsoon Restaurant on the last night in Yangon. The restaurant was prob the most posh among all that we went in this trip. They even had Happy Hour from 5 - 7pm. Each cocktail was only approx S$3! Once again, we over-ordered again, we had soup, salad and 3 mains dishes. Plus a huge heap of rice, I could hardly sit up straight after the meal. The food were all so yummy, esp the Gin Thokh, a ginger salad with peanut, chilli and sesame seed. Something refreshing and different from other salads. With impeccable service and heavenly food, we highly recommend this restaurant 😊

Afternote: Naomi who shared the taxi with us is in fact a famous food writer. Naomi Duguid, she has produced a few award winning cookbooks! Now I'm super inspired. She travelled to various place in Asia to discover the differences in the culinary culture of each
