I spent four fantastic days in Bagan Lara Croft-ing (i.e., exploring temples. Lots of them). But, before I talk about these temples, let me tell you about two unexpected things I did: 1. I stayed in a hostel and I loved it. 2. I rented an e-bike. Hosteling? Me? Ahmar, the UCLA MBA alumnus I had been put in touch with, told me he had booked at Ostello Bello Hostel in Bagan, and that it came hig... Read Full Entry

Not too interesting from the outside, which is why many people just ride past without a second look.

Unfortunately, I could not take photos. Some old guy claimed this temple as his own. He lets you in through a gate, shines a flashlight at the paintings, and asks for a gratuity as you leave.

Many of the little temples were like this. You walk up, and there are four Buddha statues inside.

Hostels and Secret Temples
I love the Lara Croft comparison - Bagan is indeed full of temples, it would take days, if not weeks, to see each one. Wonderful to hear you were able to find your own Secret Temple - very special! I get you on the "hostelling" - I too need my alone time, particularly whilst travelling. I often stay in a hotel not far from the local hostel, to be able to still take part in the great tours that they often offer. The taking off of the shoes and socks in every Temple did get to me after a bit, particularly with many of the temple floors very rough and stony - it became quite painful after a while... Enjoy Mandalay :)

Taking Shoes Off
Just did Mandalay Hill. Worst of the lot so far in terms of painful soles anddodging poop. I loved Bagan. Can't wait to bring my spouse there.

Beggars of Mount Popa
Hey, I just read your post having just ventured out this morning to Mount Popa. Unfortunately I have further information about the people you saw road side. They have been there for three years. Their village burned (or was burnt) down and the government relocated them into small “compound like” accommodations. They have no belongings and have no means of income. It is a truly disturbing site and one of those times where to good will of of passing people (all be it very impersonal and almost disregarded) have perpetuated the problem. Just thought you might have been interested in this. We have a very knowledgeable and fluent English speaking guide Cheers.

Wow. Thanks for the information.
This makes it even more disturbing. Thanks for shedding light on this.
