Cradled in the white snows of Afghanistan.
I arrived back in Kabul last week after what seemed like an enormous length of time at home in Calgary. The only thing that has changed here is that it is little whiter and little wetter.

We don't see it on the news as the majority of the footage comes from the lower lying regions of Kandahar in the West and Kabul (at only 5,600 ft) in the East. I missed most of the snowfall season here in Kabul, but it still rains sometimes in the evening or snow those big, fat, wet flakes that disappear into the mud of the streets and sidewalks. Temperatures hover between just above zero and in the lower double digits (40 to 60 F....for my American cousins). Just a light jacket needed for trips to the market, Mom.

However, as we move higher in the atmosphere (as we sometimes do in the world of aviation) the temperatures condensate the rains into clouds that stick to our aircraft and block the view of these amazing pillars of granite that do not move out of the way no matter how nice we ask them. Good operational procedures and a healthy respect for the area prevent

this blog entry from being my last blog entry.

A big day for us today as we fly to Mazar-e-Sharif, Kunduz, Faizabad, and back to Kabul before we do an add-on flight up to Dushanbe, Tajikistan......ohhh, those Russians.

Cheers,
Jay

P.S. Yesterday a car bomb exploded near the Safi Landmark hotel and Chicken Street. Gunfire. We ate french toast and played Monopoly (twice).
