Victoria Falls and Zimbabwe are beautiful. What a pity that the country has been debilatated to such a degree by the present government. Our hotel was huge and basically empty. The country has the highest rate of inflation in the world. The current exchange rate was 100,000 Zims to U.S.$1.00. The inflation is so bad that they only print the money on one side! The back of the currency is blank except for the border. The people aren't able to get the basic necessities of life. In such a hopeless environment, the Falls seemed incredibly spectacular. We felt limited in what we were able to do in the town of Victoria Falls with the hawkers and the street crime. Consequently, our experience of the area was limited to the Falls and the river cruise that was ... read more

So I reached Hunters lodge. I was preparing myself for haw bad it was going to be. I was shown to my room. I had a room to myself! With HOT water in an ensuite bathroom!!! Such luxury is easy to get used too and I made the most of it. The first day I met the other volunteers and just settled in. Then came my first day with the Lion Cubs and after a brief tour and a quick introduction to the guides I was started work with the cubs... Daily life, once again followed a simple routine: 6.30 To the rehabilitation lodge for a 7 am walk. Breakfast at 9 then either enclosure cleaning/feeding & meat prep (yuk)/behaviour enrichment Lunch at 12, when we could go into town 3 pm walks Home at about ... read more

I walked accross the bridge that spans the Zambezi and Zambia from Zimbabwe, ignoring all the taxi drivers telling me it was anything from a 4 to 11 km walk and trying to charge me anything from US$10 to US$30. After about 15 very sweaty minutes including a rather hastily taken photograph of me next to the 'Welcome To Zimbabwe Sign' I arrived at immigratration, ready to argue the fees for 'additional services' down to an affordable amount. I walked into the post filled out the immigration card and put on my 'cherpy englishman who doesn't have a clue' voice as I spoke to the officer looking at my passport. 'How long will you be staying in Zimbabwe?' 'About four to five weeks' 'I see you have a visa for Tanzania' 'Yes I need to be ... read more

We finally arrived after a lengthy drive and border delays, tired, hungry and weary, and then had to endure a talk about all the activities available to us over the next few days. We went to fuel the hangover at Mama Africas - think it was the severe over tiredness that made us laugh hysterically rather than cry when they brought us sweet doughy rolls along with tiny fried fish and popcorn (in the same bowl) - wrong on every level. The atmosphere was great though with ambient lighting and live music - the 5 of us had a nice romantic evening. Having spent the last 3 weeks sitting on our arses on the truck we were glad to get the blood pumping and go white water rafting on the Zambezi river. Our raft was pretty ... read more

Zimbabwe is cool. Yes I know that is a very generic description but it fits Zim well. Oh and how fun is it to say "Zimbabwe". Try putting emphasis on other parts of the word, there you go, now you see what I am talking about. First off I would like to say that this country is not as bad off as the media makes it out to be. There are not gun totting Africans running through the streets shooting at any whitey that they come across. These people are the nicest African people I have ever met, so helpful and friendly. Now of course I am not really able to make these sweeping generalizations without prefacing the fact that I only really went to the town of Vic Falls and did not see the rest ... read more

Zimbabwe!!!!! Ever since high school my friends Gadi Elliot, Marty, and Tyler have all screemed that beautiful word. I didn't really even know where it was until recently. To all those who still don't know where it is. It's in Central Africa. This country is Struggling to survive. The current exchange rate is 80,000 to $1. When the largest bill is 20,000 that's kind of a pain to deal with. I felt quite rich walking aroudn with 2.4 million Zims. The equivalent to 30 Us DOllars. We decided go the Casino in town, wher the limits for black jack were a dollar a hand. I ended up winning $1 million Zims ($13 US). Unfortunately the Zimbabwen economy is not very stable and they don't allow you to conver your winnings into US dollars. Oh Shux. This ... read more

all a few of the things we have seen close hand in the past few days, except of course malaria, although I do seem to be bitten by many many many misquitos. argh. taking malaria tablets though. In Vic falls at the moment. took us two days to get here via minibus from windhoek. I don't particularly reccomend this method, but it was our only option. I'll explain more later. tomorrow. Right now we are having problems withthe currency, we have usd, we need zim dollars (1:72,000) the banks are closed and you can be arrested for exchanging on the street. I don't likle to idea of zimbabwe jail, I'll be in there longer than mugabe has been president. anyway I'm famished we need to make change to get food. have no fear we only got ... read more

Now its big and impressive and very very wet. Its the Zambezi River and Victoria Falls. We have certainly viewed the falls from every angle... ...Johnny did a bungee jump and we went for the safer option of a Helicopter ride. That evening we went on a sunset booze cruise and then a flaming Absinthe session courtesy of Pierre at a engagement / stag and separate Hen celebration. Next day - severely hungover - it was white water raft - the great Zambezi... ... white water rafting - it was bad... one blind (temporarily), one puking, one damaged ankle, one mashed knee (4 stitches in hospital)!!! ... read more

L'ultraléger a l'air ultrafragile.
