We’ve made it!

After a 9 hour flight from Vancouver and San Diego Tia and I met in London for our seven hour lay over to Entebbe. Plenty of time to catch up and check in about our journey.

Even with a seven hour lay over we ended up having to run to make our flight (to add a little excitement)

We arrived at 745am on Wednesday morning in Entebbe and were met by Dan our coordinator for this part of the trip thanks to Jane from Stratosphere International. Jane mentioned to me a few months ago there would be some girls from York House in Vancouver going to Ibanda, where Dan was born, to assist the school/children in building a library. Since I know what often happens when people do volunteer initiatives overseas (foreigners giving without engaging too many local resources and leadership) I asked Jane if it would be beneficial for Tia and I to start our Global Sorority journey in Ibanda. The idea is to not only to gather interviews and stories for our documentary but also to provide leadership tools and engage the girls to become stronger leaders so they can also

share resources with the York House volunteers this summer.

After over 20 hours in transit I still hadn’t slept so the 4 hour car ride (which turned in 6 hours) on the bumpy road from Entebbe to Ibanda I spent asleep as much as I could while Tia discussed politics and social rights with Dan and Edith, a young woman who will be assisting us for the next week. Needless to say Tia and I were fast asleep by 730p and woke super early today.

This morning we headed out to the school we’ll be working at. The head master explained that they had been waiting months to meet us (no pressure) and the children were excited to have us there for support. After going through all the logistics we headed out to meet all the kids and see the school grounds.

Tomorrow we start working with a group of twenty girls and young women from 12-18 years of age over the next four days. We were also talked into getting 10 boys in there on the last day to bring them into our conversations. If the change is

going to start we should probably include everyone in the discussion right? It’s something I’ve also been asked to do but never had the support to do it so bringing the boys in at this school will be an interesting part of the journey.

We were also asked tonight to go to the secondary school to meet some of the young women there and take some footage/pictures to bring them back to Capilano university in Vancouver, BC where there has been some support already from a distance.

It’s amazing the people we have already met in the last 24 hours here and can imagine what this journey is going to unfold not only for us but for the people we meet along the way.

Great job!
I like the pictures and the way you describe your trip. Very interesting and admirable to be able to go and assist in making the world a better place to live.
