Well, a bit of a mishmash to finish of the year in Tunisia!

We found ourselves with another long weekend because of the Muslim New Year. We miss our friends in Sousse so we decided to go there yet again! Other friends were on holiday in Hammamet and they came down to see us. Luckily the weather was good even though it was a bit on the cold side. We took them around the medina and showed them the sights like the fish market and the ghoulish butchers!! We also managed to visit the Grand Mosque which had always been closed to infidels before. It was very nice inside, even though we couldn't venture beyond the courtyard.

Back home in La Marsa we took advantage of a nice day to travel to nearby Carthage. We wanted to get a close look at the Abidin Mosque which we presume is pronounced something akin to "Aberdeen"!! The police allowed us through the gates and we were waved inside the giant doors to have a look at the courtyard. It's a huge and beautiful building and the gardens over the road are lovely too. At the moment there are lots of orange

trees brimming with fruit.

Just down the road from the mosque is the North Africa American Cemetery which we have wanted to visit for some time. It is a large site with almost 3000 graves plus a memorial wall inscribed with a further 4000 names of fallen soldiers. It's a moving site with various statues and memorials including an interesting mosaic of battlefields in Tunisia.

On our way home we stopped off for a pizza. Just a little lunchtime snack as you can see from the photos!!!!!!!!!!!!

So that's Tunisia done for this year. Work has finished (hoorah!) and we fly to Egypt tonight for a warm festive season!
