Arriving in Tunisia was exciting, to say the least. No one really knew what to expect upon arrival. I had a window seat. It was like the first time I arrived in Paris. At the airport, I think everyone was nervous. We seemed to get a lot of stares, though that is to be expected when traveling in such a large group (there's 18 or so of us). The weather was wonderful, which makes me think that summer must be pretty intense. Seeing palm trees was of course a highlight. We were nervous about the bus, especially because our luggage did not all fit in the back so a lot of it was piled on top. I spoke to my parents briefly using my prof's phone. We stayed at the La Jetee hotel in La Goulette, which is a suburb of Tunis on the Mediterranean. Everything in the hotel was pink, no kidding. I guess it's not so much of a girl color here. We had traditional Tunisian food, which was very good. After dinner, we explored the town of Sidi Bou Said, which is incredibly picturesque, but it was dark so my pictures don't do it justice. There are orange
trees everywhere. And also, cats. Cats are like squirrels here. We went to a cafe on the hill to have mint tea and sheesha (hookah, which actually is the drug here, so don't ask for hookah if you ever come). The cafe was noisy, and we drew a lot of stares (this will be pretty usual for a few weeks). Some students had a conversation with some locals. After Sidi Bou Said, we were finally allowed to return and GO TO SLEEP.
