After customs?? (aren't we still in Tanzania?), we were lead to our hostel for the night by a local tour guide, and made arrangements to do a spice tour the next day and then head north to Nungwi Beach. The hostel was comfortable (hot shower), and set in a great location for exploring the narrow winding streets of Stonetown. 1st stop was a water front restaurant for a late lunch where the food was good and cheap. We then wandered aimlessly admiring the canvas paintings, carvings, bracelets etc in every store. Eventually we hit the markets which was Kra-zeeee. Anything and everything was offered for sale, and we even passed through the meat and fish market... complete with the flies! Mmm mmmmm.

The Spice tour was very interesting as it started in town viewing a couple of historical sites - the House of Wonders (built in 1883.... the biggest house and the 1st with electricity, tap water and a lift in Zanzibar), the fort, ampitheatre, the original slave chambers, and the church that was built on the site of the slave market when slavery was abolished. A very sickening experience....

We then headed out of the city (at high speed hitting bumps until the muffler fell off - the driver just picked it up and carried it in the front passenger seat continuing on with a very noisy van! ) to a spice plantation where we were shown a variety of spices and fruits growing, tasted them (not all recommended on their own), and made some purchases (to bring home if customs allow), before taken to eat a prepared lunch in one of the village homes...hmmmmmm

Mid afternoon we arrived at Nungwi Beach which is our home for 3 nights (that was yesterday) and right now the beach is calling...... Ciao
