We got up yesterday and left the Guest House at 6:30 am to catch a 10:00 flight and needed about that much time to stand in wrong lines and get to the gate. However, there was no plane in sight so we waited until about 11:15 and took off. Nice plane and we went very close to Mt. Kilimanjaro. Jeremy, an intern for the summer, met us and negotiated a taxi for us out of the about 10 drivers fighting for his attention. There are now 17 of us counting the Howells, a very nice couple from MI and those of us from New Hope. That is a lot of rooms and a lot of food, but they have both been taken care of very nicely. We, the Roes, have a little 2 bedroom guest house to ourselves, Pastor Jon has Robbie's room and Ron & Ella are sharing a bigger guest house with the 3 interns. I don't know if the parents (Ron & Ella) or the boys (Jeremy and Jordan) were more excited to see each other. The boys kept them up very late telling stories and catching up on everything. We just settled in for the rest of the
day, just enjoying being together.
Today, Wednesday, Pastor Jon & Rob, his interpreter, left early to start the study on Acts at the Bible Institute. Ron unpacked only 3 of the 9 bags we had both brought and we couldn't believe how much stuff there was. It was just amazing. After lunch, we all went to the orphanage, Tumaini, and had an exhilarating time with the children. They have budgeted for 30 children, but have 35 with yesterday's two new ones. The Bible Institute is on the same grounds as the orphanage, so we were able to see Pastor teaching and the dynamics of Rob interpreting. They seemed to be pretty matched and make a formidable pair for teaching.
The children were wonderful and we had such good time just sitting with them and playing for the afternoon. One of the new little boys, Elisha, was the loveliest little boy and yet his parents left him on a bus with no idea where to go or what to do. Amazingly tragic--and yet, as we looked at the orphanage, the happy children, the capable caretakers---we know that he will be better off and have a chance at a real life with Christ
as the center through this event in his life.
Then, about 4:45, we went to Sweya church for their 5:00 prayer meeting. Tanzanians don't eat until about 8:00 pm so this fits in well with their schedules. There were about 20 of us there and we could actually sing most of the swahili hymns if it was a tune we knew like "Higher Ground". Pastor Jon gave the devotional on unity of mind & heart of believers as they work for the Lord. The people were so kind and gracious to us.
We walked home to a delicious dinner, had family devotions and laid down the plans for tomorrow. Hope to add some pictures before my battery runs down.
Keep praying for, please.
