Yesterday marked the first day of Divali, and as Dar Es Salaam boasts a massive Indian population, we thought it would be a cool thing to witness downtown. A group of us went downtown for a yummy Lebanese dinner, before wandering over to "little India" to see what all the firework commotion was all about. Well, one of my friends described it as "probably being as close to wartime photography as we'd ever get," and I totally agree. People were setting off fireworks in their hands, on cars, under awning, and most of them were shooting directly across the street at other party goers! It was just a constant criss-cross of dangerous fireworks and other loud, fire-spitting, devices. We lasted for about 10 minutes and then went back to our friends' apartment to watch the bigger, more professional fireworks from the safety of a closed-off environment. They fireworks lasted until about 1:30am. Sorry, no photos- I just wasn't brave enough.
