Went back yesterday to look for my momobay.. hoping for a miracle.. and miracles being miracles.. they don't happen very often.. Mourned the entire afternoon.. evening.. and night yesterday.. couldn't sleep.. then the college kids camping at our campsite started their night activities.. night marching at 11pm.. and under all that noise.. i fell asleep.. i think i can't sleep when it's too quiet.. have to go burn all my photos in a CD.. i got lazy.. i got stingy.. going to do the prudent thing now.. burn 2 copies.. send one home.. keep one with self..
You know.. one bad thing about travelling with Dave on this 4WD thing.. is that we will have to stay at campsites either in the wild.. or at desigated campsites.. both far away from internet access.. another thing is that our schdule is not fixed.. and progress can be slow.. taking a bus. i know that i will reach my designation tomorrow.. even if it's a few hours late.. the bus will arrive.. barring vehicle breakdown of cos.. but travelling on the 4WD, we have to set up camp before it's dark.. i can't travel overnight.. and what we plan to reach
Dawn over Blue Nile
Can't see sunrise... blocked by buildings.. tomorrow.. we may just well arrive only the day after..
Took a break today from the partnership.. Dave's falling ill and wanted some rest.. so i got out of the campsite at sunrise.. and flagged down a local minibus to Souq Al-Shabi.. the marketplace nearest our campsite to the South of Khartoum.. i think the driver was so surprised to get a Chinese passenger that he didn't want to take my money.. minibus rides costs 50 dinars.. which is about 25 US Cts..
The souq was 5mins away by bus.. once arrived.. i took a walk around the morning market.. so nice.. zooming into the local crowds.. watching all the tomatoes, carrots, brinjals, veges.. i felt so free.. soon after, i took another minibus to Souq Al-Arabi.. in downtown khartoum..
Taking the minibus is not as difficult as it seemed.. just shout at every single minibus that pass by you on the road.. if they are going where you want to go.. they'll just stop.. and you run up to the bus.. i got on a wrong bus initially.. but asked the locals around me in the bus.. and quickly got down.. shouted "Arabi! Arabi!" again.. got
Campsite #2
We moved to the Sudan National Camping Residence cos Dave wanted to try it out.. at least they have shower heads and working water supply.. which Blue Nile didn't up another bus.. 50 dinars for a 20min bus ride to downtown.. shiok.. haha.. man.. i miss travelling alone i guess.. do things at my own pace.. jump on a local bus whenever you feel like it.. stop by and chat with the locals for however long you want.. i mean i dun mind travelling with another like-minded person.. but i dun think i'll travel together again with a 60yr old stranger.. unless he can keep up with my pace.. or unless i'm more leisure.. and dun have a 3 months deadline to do cairo to cape..
going down to the Ethiopian embasssy again later.. hopefully i can get my visa.. Went there yesterday, but was told they only issue visas to sudan residents for indonesia.. cos i guess the 2 countries relationship not that good.. so i found out where the indonesian embassy is.. got a recommendation letter from them , and hope that with the indo embassy's letter, the ethio embassy guys can give indo a bit of face and let me have the visa.. if not, guess i'll fly straight to Nairobi, Kenya from Khartoum..
It's not too bad an idea actually.. that means i'll
Moving out at Sunrise
See the minibus on the left? Flagged that down after taking this shot.. free ride to the market! have more time to laze by the beach in Malawi.. in Dar Es Salaam.. and in the west coast of Namibia.. i'll also skip the tough travelling from the Ethio-Kenya border to Nairobi.. bandit country.. and may be in time to hop on an overland tour all the way to capetown..
ok.. going to burn some CDs now.. and to the ethiopian embassy later.. wish me luck..
