Merry Christmas!!!
With our prezzies!!! A verrrry merry Christmas from Stellenbosch!!!
We packed up our tent ‘motel 6’ for the last time as we left bush camping behind and began our journey back to civilisation in South Africa. After three nights in Swakopmund I think we realised that we actually enjoy bush camping a lot more than the more westernised parts of Africa. When we are all in the wilderness sleeping in tents, cooking off the back of the truck and huddled around the camp fire - all completely in the middle of nowhere there is a sense of being in the ‘real Africa’. However there are of course upsides to heading back to some sort of normality – an actual toilet (rather than a hole in the ground) and a hot shower, bliss!
The day we crossed the border from Namibia to South Africa was a looooong driving day on the truck. Finally we arrived at our next stop - Stellenbosch. On first impressions this seems like a quaint little Dutch inspired town, this was in stark contrast to our hostel where there seemed to be 24/7 rave going on – so bad that some people from the tour checked out and went
to Cape Town two days early!! However we persevered and celebrated the eve of Christmas on a wine tour. We visited four vineyards around the region and ‘tasted’ copious amounts of wine, stuffed ourselves with cheese and treated ourselves to a couple of bottles of Cap Classique (champagne) for a swanky Christmas breakfast the following day. Everyone was very merry as the day went on and the start of the Christmas festivities went on well into the night.
Merry Christmas!!! Needless to say everyone was feeling a tad rough on Christmas morning, but everyone got back into the festive spirit as we toasted our champagne and tucked into some pancakes. As the day went on it couldn’t have felt any further away from the traditional Christmas at home, as we all lay by the pool in the 25 degree heat munching on ice lollies rather than mince pies! However all was not lost in the way of tradition as the group exchanged secret Santa presents which we had all picked up a few days before. I was lucky enough to have picked out a toy guiter – just what i’ve always wanted, whilst Jamesy was in for a treat
of ‘truck essentials’ including a tin of tuna and some petroleum jelly (??!). We then went to the local garage to pick up some prezzies for eachother, Jamesy was over the moon with the High School Musical/Zac Effron goodie bag (As per I went over our $2 budget) which I treated him to and I was delighted to get a stash of sweets and a bear balloon! Also in keeping with tradition I managed to do three rounds of our Christmas dinner which was a delicious lamb spit roast with cauliflower cheese and plenty of other trimmings followed by pudding, I was more stuffed than a Christmas turkey by the end of the night!
We both had a great day and made the most of our Christmas with a twist, however we did miss everyone at home lots and hope you all had a wonderful day!
Lots of Love Claire and James x x x
