Every couple of days or so, we have wild baboons visit, the property is part of their range and they come looking to pinch some of the monkeys food. The baboons are usually lead in by a female juvanial we call Aphrodite, she is very confident and sometimes comes alone to check things out. Amazingly the monkeys and the baboons seem to get on well. We just sit in the clearing observing them while they observe us.
A Couple of days ago Molly and I were sitting at the far end of the clearing bordering the forest as it is the sunniest spot. We were reading and it took a while for us to realist the baboons had arrived. We were in a real good spot to watch them as they emerged from the forest into the clearing, there is about 30-40 in the troop and this day they all decided to visit. Suddenly only about 10mtres away the alpha male appeared, he was enormous and majestic, he gave us a casual sideways glance then coolly strode into the clearing, he was followed by all the top females with babies of various ages clinging to them.
Molly and I looked at each other both thinking the same thing; that he was very very big.
The troop stayed about an hour before disappearing back into the darkness of the forest.
