01 Sleepy
A sleepy looking Spotted Hyena. Geo: -24.9854, 31.6018
Our first destination for the morning game drive was the place where we saw the many hyenas yesterday afternoon. This morning there was only one hyena to see. It was an adult one and it was just lying down and looking very sleepy. We patiently waited around hoping that more would come out of the bush, but no such luck so we continued driving.
The next stop was to watch a large Rock Monitor enjoying the warm morning sun as it lay on a rock. We then saw impalas and zebras on our way to the top of a look out. At the lookout we were able to get out and stretch our legs. It was a nice view from here, but a bit too high to actually see any animals.
Soon after, we stopped to watch a large bull elephant eating just by the side of the road. We then came to a dam. Here we saw a few floating hippos and various birds. Continuing on, we saw a tortoise, the backside of an elephant as it walked into the bush and a couple of white rhinos sitting in mud. We were now back at camp and stopped
02 Basking
A Rock Monitor basking in the morning sun. at the shop for a cold drink before continuing our morning drive.
We then saw a buffalo, beautiful scenery and a small pond with purple lilies growing in it. Paul and I then witnessed a sad sight as we drove very slowly along a dirt track. A young impala was slowly walking along the track towards us. There were no other impalas around at all. We stopped the car and it came right up to my window making a distressed sound. Paul thinks it must have been deserted by its mother. We didn't think that it would last much longer on its own in a park full of many predators.
In the distance we spotted a pair of elephants standing in the shade of a small tree. Paul then spotted an owl, in a tree very close to the road. We had a good view of it. We then came across a wet bull elephant eating as he walked and then another bull elephant that disrupted traffic by walking on the road. It was now nearly one pm and the temperature gauge in the car said it was 40 degrees! Way to hot, we should be in the pool, not
03 Grazing
Impalas and zebras grazing down below us. driving around! Soon after we arrived back at camp and did the usual – eat, swim and sleep.
It was just before 4 o'clock when we started our afternoon game drive. A few minutes later the temperature was 43 degrees. The drive started with a male impala that were busy grazing. As we slowly drove over a small bridge we spotted a breeding herd of elephants making their way through the bush. We stopped on the bridge and watched them as they crossed the river and walked back in the bush.
We briefly watched a couple of adult baboons that were sitting around and grooming each other. For a while there wasn't much to see, so we enjoyed the scenery. Then we saw a small breeding herd of elephants approaching the road. We watched them as they crossed the road and went off into the bush. Then we came across another troop of baboons. We observed them as they foraged for food and groomed each other.
On the way back to camp we saw a couple of interesting birds and watched the sun set behind the railway bridge.
