Hello again,

My second entry from South Africa, and a splendid week it has been. I have lots of photos to show you, much more than I can really put on the blog, but I'll see what I can fit on. Did erosion control work on Monday, which basically was pulling logs and prickly branches together to stop vehicles from neighbouring properties from taking unauthorised shortcuts through the bush. By the time the branches have rotted down in five years or so, the grasses have grown through and provide good grazing for the wildlife.
On Tuesday, four of us went on a horseback safari, riding through the bush on very comfortable horses, which gives you a good chance of getting close to the game without them getting spooked. It is about thirty years since I last got on a horse, but I soon got the hang of it and looked just like Lester Piggot (it helped that they never went faster than an amble).
Thursday was the big day, a full day spent in the Kruger National Park. Although the anaimals have free access between Campfire and Kruger, we had to travel about twenty miles to a main gate to

gain access. You are not allowed to travel off road, even if you could. The Bushveld is nothing like the Masai Mara for instance. You would need a challenger tank rather than a Land Rover to get through the thick vegetation. I will let the snaps do the talking, suffice it to say that the number of animals exceeded my expectations.
In the evening we stayed at the home of one of the FCASA students in White River, up in the Drakensburg mountains. Lovely food, a beautiful House and a warm welcome. I awoke about seven the following morning and floated in the comfortable bed until eight. I thought they had all left without me, but I was the first one up.
We spent the Friday travelling on the panorama route in the Drakensburg mountains. Some remarkable vistas, and every stop had local people selling their handicrafts for souvenirs. While we were on the trip, my good friend Gabriel Johansson was getting on his plane home to Sweden, so we couldn't join in the usual mass send off at the local airport. Hope you had a good trip home Gabe.
The VW combi had travelled about four hundred miles over

the two days and finally let us down, with a fried clutch in Hoedspruit town centre. Luckily help was near at hand and we transferred to another vehicle to get back to campfire in time for dinner at seven.

Next on the agenda is the boat trip down the river on Sunday and some time in the near future a full day hike in the mountains. See you soon. Ken
