Dubai- Late Afternoon Tan
View of Hennie and Wesley's (now ex) apartment 30 March - We’ve packed all our stuff, shipped the bigger Stuff to South Africa and left with one backpack each plus a few extras that we would need for the first stages of the trip. The last few weeks have been very busy with lots to sort out. When we get on the plane it finally sinks in that we’re leaving the UK and off on a big adventure.
The first stop is Dubai and we arrive at 5am, a bit later than planned because of delays. Hennie and Wesley have kindly offered to have - us at their lovely apartment overlooking the Sea and Palm islands.
It’s Spring and still about 30 odd degrees during the day. There are new buildings everywhere and the city is growing at a rapid pace
Highlights: - The Souk
- Managed to get onto the Palm Island with a bit of luck and cunning
- Swimming in the bay
- The architecture and incredible buildings
- The view of the ocean from Hennie and Wesley’s now ex apartment.
- Drinks and dinners in lovely places
02 April - Arrive in South Africa. The weather is almost perfect for
our entire stay and we feel very fortunate after the bad London weather. The days are about 25+ degrees mostly and nights are slightly cool but still fine with a thin jersey at most.
Highlights: - Brett and Amanda’s wedding in Joies
- Meeting Steve’s newest niece, Kelly, and baby cousin Jarryd
- General visiting with family and friends
- Chilling at Steve’s Dad and Mom’s house
- Looking after Brett and Amanda’s cats
- Pilansberg Game reserve with Steve Dreyer
- Driving Dave and Lee’s white beetle for the entire trip
- Black eagles in the Botanical Gardens in Roodepoort
- Experiencing the “Load Shedding” power cuts a couple of times per week.
- De Wildt Cheetah & Wild Dog Rehabilitation Centre with Aunty Jenny
- Marco and Roland’s party with live music in Randburg
- Pizza by candlelight with Trevor & Linda in Randburg during load shedding
- Johnny Clegg in concert with Aunty Mad and Nick
- Cradle of Mankind with Steve’s Mom, Dad plus Julie and Nicole
- Sailing on the Vaal Dam with Dee, Greg and Kelly
- Lunch at the Wild Olive in Greenside with Martin
- Drinks at Moyo by Zoo
Dubai- Out and about
Hennie and Wesley with Valerie lake with Dave and Liam
- The Maize Maze with Dave, Lee and Liam
- Tea with Gran at Contessa in Rivonia
- Dinner at Dom and Alex’s with the family
- Playing Wii with Nicole and Julie at Trace and Steve’s house
- Valerie’s Birthday visit to the Spa for a treatment

Lowlight: Having someone bash into Dave and Lee’s Beetle in the parking lot on our last day! Bastards!
Dave has also given us the German in the Shoe which we now have to take responsibility for and take on our trip. We’re not even sure if he is German, he looks a bit Swiss, but we let him keep his name anyway
