Well, the grueling ten hours from London to Joburg (local slang for Johannesburg) are over. It wasn't that bad really, it's just a long time to spend in a metal tube 35,000 feet up. I guess I should start this though with a description of my trip up to this point.
As many of you know, I left Portland at about 11:30 on Wednesday the 25th. It turns out that "direct flight" I thought I had to London had not just a stop, BUT A PLANE CHANGE! Okay, so I wasnt' that concerned about it. I stopped in Chicago and was heading to the next gate when I realized, I'm kinda hungry. So I stop at a stand and get some popcorn (which the yellow chese dye didn't come off my hands for a full twelve hours) and check the gate, which has no one there. I sit down, am leisurely eating my chesecorn when I hear the lady at the desk mention my seat number. I get up to ask what's going on and she informs me that I am the last passenger and they are about to take my bags off the plane!!! I quickly hurried on, and
Eat
A restaraunt called EAT was assisted by a very kind flight attendant into a two seat row with only me in it : ) It wasn't even near my assigned seat but she didn't care. See, kids, sometimes it does pay to be late.
Landing in London at about 8 am local time, I was still debating whether or not to leave the airport seeing as I had a ten hour layover there. HMMMMM...... stuffy airport OR a cool city I've never been to? I wonder which one I took! Lucky for me, the underground trains leave right from the airport. It took about an hour to get to downtown, but sadly, I knew not which stop to get off at! I picked one at random, which on the map seemed fairly close to the water (where all things cool to look at in London are near). Leicester station it turns out was not the closest one I could have chosen but hey how was I to know? Taking one last look at the map on the subway of where the waterfront was in relation to the station, I headed out.........only then realizing that although I knew the waterfront was south of the
???
Can you belive they have KFC in London? station, I knew not which way south was!!! So after just strolling around a bit, and stalking some old ladies that looked like they knew where they were going, I finally remembered that I can tell from the sun a vague direction of south. I headed that way and eventually reached the water (YAY!). I happened to have ended up right next to the London Eye (that huge ferris wheel from Fantastic Four 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer Available in Stores Now!).
Anyhoo, blah blah blah, I walked around London for about four hours, took like 150 pics, ate at a restaurant called EAT, and my feet finally hurt! But was I near the underground? Not really. Also, whenever you ask a Londoner for directions, they will say five minutes walk that way, but that is rarely the case. Finally finding an underground station, I made my trek back to the airport.
Thats all I'm putting on for now, I'm going to try to add some pics, but know that I am here safe!
