Eat mushies at your own risk!
It's rumoured that JRR Tolkien took alot of his inspiration for the Lord of the Rings from this mountainous area and everything about Hogsback was indeed magical. After racing to get the shuttle we left E.L. and slowly gained altitude whilst the temperature plummeted. After an hour the blue sky was non existant and the fog was so thick visibility was down to a few feet. The driver wasn't fazed and handled the conditions like a rally driver. We were thankful not to be able to see over the cliffs! We arrived late arvo in the pouring rain and the only thing really to do was sit in front of the fire and play board games. We did set our yet un named new tent up, but all our stuff stayed by the fire and that's where we ended up camping for two nights! This was one place that was set up well to handle wet weather. The weather broke the next morning and we set out on the most amazing hiking we'd done. We went for about five hours with our trusty guide dog Jagermeister and marveled in the wet, muddy, misty forest with hundreds of waterfalls, massive trees, cliffs

and views and just a general feeling that we were the only people on Middle Earth and that at any moment a fairy would jump up from behind a tree! At one stage after our guide led us to the monkeys we could hear them all laughing at us. One sat on a branch and waved a stick around whilst a group of others manouvered themselves quietly above us in the trees. With all the rain they bounced up and down on the branches and drenched us! We had to laugh! All over the BP were signs that mushrooms can kill and are very dangerous and prominent in the area. They were everywhere and also very colourful, but we weren't hungry! The last hour or so of our hike from the Madonna and Child waterfall it rained and although we were covered in mud and soaked (under the boots and rain gear we were warm and dry) I would have happily set out again for another hike. Lucky Hendo won third place in a Grand National sweepstakes and her little windfall bought us some well deserved beers! The BP were advertising for a manager and bar person and although we

were never serious we talked about being able to live and work here for a while. We also know that around every new corner is another place with charm and character that we must visit, no point getting stuck!
