An uneventful day as it was apparently too rough to dive. I went to Ile Goree today, very quaint. Met a Belgian girl who works for the Red Cross. She has three masters, so it sounds like I’m on the right path. She sort of ditched me for supper though, so to hell with her. Also I recently has the difficult experience of trying to explain what laser eye surgery is to my African friends! Their only response: On na pas ca ici… ... read more

Well scuba diving went well, despite starting off by putting my wetsuit on backwards. The rest went OK, although for the first thirty seconds or so I thought “there’s no way I can do this”, which surprised me. But I got over it quickly and eager to become competent. I think the initial thing is getting over the idea of breathing while underwater, which just seems wrong. After diving, I went to see Kyromi and Eri for the last time (maybe) at the house they’re staying at (Salif’s). After getting caught in a post wrestling match celebration I went to Salif’s and had a chicken and couscous family meal. Afterward we went to visit a wedding party so we could show the groom pictures of his own wedding (which he missed --- WTF?). Everyone is very, ... read more

I finally left that rat-infested whore house “Le Provancal” and am at “Oceanium” where I’m about to start what very well may become a life-long love of scuba diving, or today might be a once only. Yesterday evening was grand! Finally got an email back from Kiryomi, telling me that they were going to see Youssou N’Dor. Thinking that I’d go a bit early to ensure that I didn’t miss them I showed up at 11:15 pm. Of course they didn’t arrive until 1:15 am (with two dudes --- Salif and Baidou). The show didn’t start until 2 am. At first I thought I was in the wrong place because it was a Gendarmarie base, but no. Anyway the guys turned out to be cool and the show was pretty rockin’! Senegalese girls! Wow! Best butts ... read more

Well I made it to Dakar, although I’m pretty sure I’m staying in a brothel! Not dumb (desperate?) enough to sample the merchandise. It turns out that Eri and Kiryomi are in Dakar until Monday so I really hope I can meet up with them tonight, if only to have someone to hang out with. I’ve decided that the camera is kaput and have bought a better one in the market. It seems to work well and it seemed to be a good price at 70,000 CFA (started at 175,000 CFA). Hopefully it continues to work well. On the way back through the market I felt a large ‘whop’ on my right calf. I turned around to see a red-headed dude (dye of course) with his fists clenched and a crazed look in his eye. Although ... read more

Due to the lack of appropriate medical facilities in Guinea, I've been whisked away to Senegal for my mid-service check up. Despite all the fun forms and doctor visits, I'm choosing to see this as a second vacation. First things first, the moment I got off the plane, I was greeted by sliding glass doors. I'm travelling with another volunteer from Guinea and we took this as a sign that Dakar would be a little different than what we were use to in Conakry. The customs officials immediately inferred that we were Peace Corps volunteers and started speaking to us in Wolof (the predominantly spoken local language in Senegal). We apologized in French, saying we didn't understand. But apparently Peace Corps is very well known here, and has a great reputation because this didn't really bother ... read more

This entry dates to Thursday April 9, and, again, is pretty much straight out of my journal I woke up thursday morning and mr jobe was right next to me. i shot out of bed and went to the bathroom. when i came back he had stretched himself across my part of the bed. i took the towels off the chair and sad and read my book until he woke up. we got ready and the wife brought food. we ate and left. we walked to the junction where i hailed us a cab. he said "are you sure you want to ride in that cab? the body looks sketchy." it was one of the nicer cabs i'd seen in dakar. i said "they all look like that, most worse." so we got in and set ... read more

so this entry dates to April 8, 2009. again, almost straight out of my journal. so on wednesday April 8, i woke up at 8:30 and took a shower, which basically consisted of washing my feet since my hair was in braids and i didn't want to get it wet. the wife of the guy we were staying with brought us breakfast which consisted of bread and butter with some weird coffee/tea concoction that was pretty tasty. by 9:30 we had left. first we went to the bank where i tried to exchange travelers' cheques, but of course they didn't. so they directed us to some sort of plaza. we found a taxi for CFA5000 and left. we were in the cab for probably an hour and a half dodging cars, trucks, vans, horses, and people ... read more

country number 6! (if you count the united states). this entry dates to April 7, 2009, and is pretty much right out of my journal. i woke up at 6 am, ate breakfast, had coffee, finished packing, and cleaned my room (i do that now!). by 6:30, which Mr. Jobe told me he was going to pick me up, i was ready to go. mr jobe arrived an hour late, so i read The DaVinci Code until he got there. he arrived and we took a cab to banjul. i payed D200 for both of us. i planned on paying for him for the way there and the way back. that's D1740 (D25 to the dollar). what i didn't plan for was paying for a vacation for 2. we got out of the taxi, walked through ... read more

(Sorry for the pictures. The first day that I could go out and take them, it was hazy). It's been five years that I left Africa.......so when we landed at 430am, I was not sure what to expect: excited on the one hand but nervous on the other. I have to admit that I was also mentally prepared to go to battle, given all those years I spent fighting my way past corrupt officers, police, and officials asking for cadeaux and threatening you. But to my surprise, everyone was calm and friendly. So we snaked along the Cape from the airport in the city center on the corniche road......it was very dry and sandy, the desert meeting the sea. All along the road were posh restaurants, casinos, and patesseries packed with party-goers at 5am. The houses--mansions--were ... read more

Our First Blog Entry from this Adventure! Greetings everyone, so Kaitlyn and I are safe and sound Stellenbosch South Africa but the journey here was a little longer then expected. It started out fine with a night at my Aunt Ruthie's and Uncle Steve's in Newark NJ. The next morning we found that a few inches of snow had fallen and it was COLD out. But we made it to JFK International with plenty of time to spare. We had a two hour layover in Senegal after our seven hour flight. The landing was ruff, but I have experienced worse and thought nothing of it. As the crew changed we all dosed off, it was about four in the morning. So we taxi on the landing strip/runway and sat for a few hours because, as our ... read more
