Some general restaurant info: Customer service in restaurants is the main area for improvement. Eating out takes between 1 and 2 hours (or more), and many menu options are not actually available. There is a great variety of quality for the food and the wait staff. Most of the eateries make great use of outdoor space with the majority of the tables set out on patios. Papyrus (5 stars): Our favorite restaurant and a short walk from home, Papyrus serves wood-fired pizzas and homemade pasta. Their menu is in French and English, and they have a good selection of wines, including some inexpensive South African choices. The pasta ranks above L.A. restaurants. Shokola (5 stars): This Middle Eastern restaurant features fresh fruit juices, good tea selection, Mexican food on Sundays, hookah, and couch seating. Flamingo (4 ... read more

today is what is known as umuganda. The last Saturday of each month when all residents have to go and do some community chores together, both as a means of getting to know each other and to get some stuff done I guess. This involves jobs such as clearing the verges. Very few people have addresses out here and so the towns/villages are divided into divisions and then secteurs and then cells, so people’s addresses just contain their name and cell name and someone within that cell will know them! There must be a good hundred houses per cell and it is in these cell group that they do umuganda. One person per household is expected to turn up each month. Apparently there aren’t even tools to go around and so people end up sitting and ... read more

This week has been somewhat limited workwise due to a daily power cut, which we found out today has been scheduled for a month but unbeknown to us. The electricity goes off at 8am and comes back on at 5pm….pile poil the hours of a working day!! Today was hot…very hot and instead of staying in the shade like any normal person I decided I’d brave the sun and catch some rays - although Rwamagana is not exactly a holiday destination so no-one just lies in the sun. Tuesday I went off to find a place at a local primary school for a young girl who has aids and whose schooling and care is being funded by a guy in the UK. Fortunately they do have a place and the hospital adjacent to the school has ... read more

Not sure if I’ve told you that we have a houseboy at the office - he does all our cooking and washing and cleaning and general help. Its very weird having someone doing all your chores for you - but many people out here do and he gets paid pretty well for it. He is very keen cleaning the floors several times a week by hand, cooking good wholesome meals and keeping this place neat and tidy. It's as if he’s been trained to please which makes me feel rather awkward sometimes. For example today I was lying in the sun on the grass since we had nothing to do and he went and found and brought me a towel to lie on . He speaks little English but we manage to communicate in some form ... read more

Its not the sun that wakes me, - my room being west facing, but an army of men running (very slowly I might add) past my window at half five shouting encouragement to themselves as they go. This tends to be weekends and I’m told the school choir practice early on weekends too so that should be a nice change! During the week it tends to be Cykabare the houseboy who is busy doing something. But in all honestly I love being up early because it means I can go to sleep early!! I tend to get up at six or quarter past and do some skipping or pilates before it gets too hot. I only dare do the skipping outside as this brings an audience as it is. Getting warmed up tends to help with ... read more

Greetings all from Rwanda…my third east African country in just over 10 days. Phewwee! A whistle-stop tour of the cradle of civilization but boy, its an experience. Gruelling…hot…intense…exciting…magnificent are just a few adjectives to throw out there… So, grab yourself a cup of steaming chai and settle down as Im currently online in a convent in the town of Musanze, dropping off point for the Parc National de Volcans http://images.google.rw/images?q=Parc%20National%20de%20Volcans&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi and home to the critically endangered mountain gorillas. Tomorrow we don our hiking boots, bathe in mosquito repellant and traipse deep into the ‘Land of a Thousand Hills’ in search of these incredible animals… but for now, let me re-cap on the trip so far….. Having negotiated Nairobbery , its eclipse, its slums,... read more

My home for the next 5 weeks is a reasonable sized village i'd say. There is a tarmac road running along the north end of town with the garages, bus station and hospital and then a 2km tarmaced loop around the 'village'. All the remaining roads are mud/dust tracks stretching for miles covered by coffee/banana/seetcorn plantations - each plot is not very large and could certainly not be used to serve any purpose other than selling at the local market. There are mud/concrete houses scattered all around, people taking enormous pride in their home, sweeping and cleaning everyday. The tarmaced route through the centre of town is lined with tailoring shops, bikonjes (small rooms to have a drink and snack), general shops (consisting of a 3x4m room and the back wall covered with anything and everything), ... read more

An unanticipated trip to Kigali today to help one of the other girls doing the same thing as me but in a different organisation to find some safe accomodation. She unfortunately thought the guy working in the hostel was being friendly in showing her around but clearly had ulteriour motives and made her feel very uncomfortable. As a lone female traveller it is always useful to say you're married or getting married soon and often to be fairly cold on first meeting guys.... shame cos i'm sure most are merely friendly. being sunday morning everyone was in church and so the bus, with a picture of Michael Jackson on the back and a motif saying 'still alive', was pretty empty. A pleasant change from the buses normally where 16 seater minivans are stuffed to the limited ... read more

I am working for an association set up in 1998 which provides support for education for less fortunate children. It was set up by a group of guys who grew up as orphans in Uganda and who decided that they had to come back home after everything that happened in 1994. The organisation has grown and now has day and boarding students who can learn construction, tailoring or mechanics. All students will have completed primary school at the very least and many secondary school as well. Interestingly there doesn't seem to be any thought as to what skills Rwanda needs because it seems to me that there are thousands or tailors already. That is not specific to this organisation though. Alongside the college for older students there is also a pre-school. The term only starts at ... read more

Today was a “down” day since I did not have tons of meetings and tons of information fed to me through a fire house. Breakfast was great - thick breakfast tortillas (I forget the Rwandese word) and an egg scramble with coffee, etc. I did not have to rush off, so I was able to get ready leisurely today. The first stop today was the genocide memorial. Simon had a meeting last night with some missionaries in Kigali and spent the night there. I am not sure how he pulled together a meeting last minute. He was planning to return to Gisenyi yesterday afternoon, but did not realize that we had a full day planned for us. He went with the flow like it was nothing and managed to plan a meeting and a place to ... read more
