With apologies for the delay - I blame technology (and it can't answer back) - here are some photos of Windhoek which I had intended to accompany my last blog. Last year I was too cautious - and extremely mindful of the numerous warnings about carrying valuables around town - to use my camera in Windhoek. Now the town feels like my second home and, albeit I continue to be extremely circumspect, I am now prepared to take photos at least in the central areas. For anyone who's interested, I've set out below - with minor tweaks - the guff I wrote about Windhoek last September. Well, you don't get off without ANY blurb, you know! Windhoek is quite unlike any other African city - and, if I’d had any doubt about the veracity of ... read more

Thur 12 We drove to fish river canyon - the second biggest canyon in the world. We wandered along the edge and then back for sunset- but it wasn't that spectacular. The canyon itself was huge but I seem to remember the Grandcanyon being a nice colour. (I've been so spoilt that I'm not wowed by these sights anymore!) ... read more

Tue 10th We made the truck leave an hour later than planed so Steve, Nick and I could go Quad biking again. The weather was clearer, so the views more spectacular and as there was only 3 of us we went over more jumps (well up cliff faces that then flatten out so as you go over at speed the wheels come off the ground). Unfortunately with only 30 mins left travelling at 70km/h I slid down a sideways slope and headed over a grassy mound flew into the air, just as I landed hit another knoll and again all 4 wheels left the ground. When the bike landed I managed to stay on it for a few more seconds before flipping over the front - luckily to the left and the bike went right. ... read more

Sat 7th Drove to a cape fur seal colony, thousands of sea lions for as far as you can see, very noisy and even more smelly. Lots of pups around as well so very cute- once over the smell. They have so many there, they have to cull some of them and you can buy fur wallets etc from a little shop- def not my thing. Then onto Swakopmund- Heini’s home town- and back into a hostel. We booked our activities and then wandered around town which has a German feel to it, which was dead as it is Easter weekend. In the evening we went to an Italian for dinner which had huge portions- I ended up taking half my pizza home for tomorrow. But the ribs were the most impressive lump of meat ... read more

Round The World 2007 Ok, I was going to go through and put in each town but it will take too long, as well as FRC we went to Etosha, Spitzkoppe, Swakopmund and Windhoek. Namibia was fantastic, not sure without my passport when we arrived and when we left. It is definately home to some of my best memories, i learnt to sandboard down a dune, climbed one at 5am to watch the sun rise and jumped out of a plane! and that was all in 2 days! Sandboarding was a lot of fun and i cant wait to try snow boarding either this trip if we have time or another time, i went down the dune on a body board too and reached a speed of 57kph I think, cant remember. Skydiving is the single ... read more

Spitzkoppe dessert camp Africa » Namibia » Spitzkoppe By TamsinApril 6th 2007Tamsin SebbaFri 6th Drove to Spitzkoppe and stayed near some hills that jutted out of the sand. I climbed up one of them- not quite to the top- it was harder than it looked either large steep slopes of big boulders and fining a way down which didn’t involve falling down a crevice was more difficult than expected but most importantly I made it down in time for dinner! ... read more

Africa » Namibia » Etosha National Park April 5th 2007

Tue3rd Got the truck over the boarder to Namibia, we arrived in Windhock, the capital, at 2pm and had till 5 to explore. It was very modern fairly big town. We went to a tea place for lunch and then onto the net.. We then drove to a hostel- yes no tents!! And out to dinner at Jo’s beer house where the carnivores had such delights at zebra, croc, springbock and ostrich and the veggies were left with rather grotty pasta. Wed 4th Full day on the truck but I put one of the mattresses on the floor and slept some of the way. It was raining as we drove through Etosha park on the way to the campsite. The campsite is next to a big drinking pool for the animals and has chairs around ... read more

High were my expectations of the Namibian capital. A castle Neuschwanstein perched on the slopes between the Eros and Auas mountain chains, with a quaint cobblestoned town centre of thatched roof houses, was the least I expected. Of course this wasn’t the case as we arrived at six o’ clock to a nondescript bus-station, next to a soulless mall and the sky was as grey as in a Philip K. Dick inspired science fiction movie. The sun never rose that day, instead that grey excuse for a sky shed yet more dreariness to the capital with its neat and tidy streets. During my second visit to the city, that first impression was totally washed away by the city’s friendly inhabitants, but for the first few days, that impression stayed and flecked our experience of what ... read more

Happy Pesach and Happy Easter! Well, I am proud to say that I made it to a Passover Seder in Africa! It was great...My principal even let me take the day off to go to Windhoek for it as long as I came back, and told her and all the other teachers about the seder tomorrow... So the director of my program, Maggie, is Jewish and she's from Las Vegas. When I asked her what she was doing for Passover, she told me that she got invited to a seder by someone she didn't even know...so I asked her if I could come, and she said she would check. Turns out, it was this woman Lucy who is a Jewish Social Worker from New York, and her daughter is currently finishing her senior year at ... read more
