May 11, Friday More Dunes, Some Atlantic Ocean and Back to Okahandja
OK I lost a day somewhere. It was hot outside at 8:30 am this morning. I woke up feeling refreshed, had a cup of Ricoffee and some breakfast that was provided with the room. Then we packed up to head off to the dunes. When we lined up to pay for our rooms we were told that the owner wanted us to pay only half of the already low rate that we were quoted. What a blessing. It is really great to be with Charlene for these types of adventures since she is quite spontaneous and the kids are flexible. We detoured toward the lagoon t see the flamingos. Dakotah developed another killer coldsore as we arrived in Namibia. The Dakotah and the boys decided to go for a swim. I wonder if the salt water will help the coldsore. They ran out to scare the flamingos into flight. Charlene got some great photos. The kids swam until they felt like getting out then we saw pelicans. They are really funny looking birds. We stopped in to the Pick-n-pay to get some more of those great cheese buns
and some wax for the dune boards and we were on our way to the dunes again. Across the road from Steve’s Take Out there is an advertisement for a baby contest in the window of Die Restaurant. We got to the other dunes which were right near the ocean. The boys got out the wax and waxed up the boards real good then Trevor, Tavis and Dakotah headed up the dune. We stayed in the car which we couldn’t keep running because it was acting funny. (It turns out later that the mechanics had put the wrong air filter in the car) They went They went way faster, dangerously fast on those waxed boards. On the way back Trevor and Dakotah were doubling on the board and had a great tumble about halfway down the dune. They came back when they were overheated with sand from head to toe. They got in the car and we headed for the ocean to get them cleaned off. The boys were upset when it was time to leave because they had just found a multitude of fishing weights that they wanted to collect and sell. But we had to get going so
we could beat Pete home. I guess we made good time, with just one pee break beside the dirt pile on the side of the road, so we were able to stop at the rock market. It’s a makeshift market of uncut, mostly uncleaned crystals and gems of all sorts. The kids all bought something for $5 each then had even more fun picking up rocks of f the side of the road. We got back to Okahandja just before 6pm and Pete wasn’t back yet. It turns out he had to drive for about an hour in the dark with no headlights, just fog lights. We had another good night’s rest.
Toll of our adventures so far: One wrecked tire, 2 chips in the windshield, unknown engine damage due to incorrect airfilter.
May 12 Saturday
Saturday was a crazy day. Dakotah, Trevor and Tavis went for a hike up the mountain. They encountered a centipede and collected a shed from a Black Mamba Snake. I repacked my suitcases today then Megan and I went for a walk to meet up with the hikers while Charlene caught some ZZs. Charlene and Pete do a lot of taxi-ing volunteers
around for CHI. Charlene was up at 4am this morning headed for the airport and Pete went again at 2pm. Charlene was the brie master this evening preparing a dinner of hamburgers, Droewors (there’s supposed to be two little dots over the e) and chicken. With potatoes and greek salad, this was a feast. The dinner was great and the company too. After dinner we went over to the Ark to do some delivery and meet with the new volunteer. I spent some time talking with Joanne. She’s a volunteer with CHI’s Care and Compassion Ministry and a wonderful person to talk to. I could have sat and talked with her for hours but there wasn’t hours. We had to go home to bed.
May 13 Portuguese Church
Today we got up for Church. Pete and Charlene attend a Portuguese speaking Church in Windhoek. They go there to maintain some ties with the people of Angola and to try and keep some of their Portuguese language up to snuff. Pete experimented with creating Crepes, of course the one thing I mentioned for breakfast was in none of the recipe books. He did a good job winging it and had
it perfected by the second to last crepe. Then off we go to church. On the way to Windhoek we pass a billboard that says “Use Smile condoms, It’s a holiday” and I learned that Pete remembers my name by word associations. He is supposed to remember smelly --> Kelly except he thinks Stink - ??? … HA. Church was interesting. There was a speaker who talks really fast and really loud so nobody could hear the interpreter. The beginning and the end were good with presentations from the youth and choir singing. Another good billboard on the way home “Don’t drink and DIE.” The R and V had dropped out of the word.
