Just another quick one, as Mozambique is a ridiculously expensive country I have discovered and this stupid internet cafe is costing me 3mets a minute! (Which reminds me, Mum please check your facebook about money matters! Hotmail doesnt work here again!) We ended up only staying in Maputo for one night, it might be the capital but it's a hole! Imagine a dirty grotty dangerous city that you hate, then times it by ten. The people aren't nice, the place is dirty and there's litter EVERYWHERE and the pavement is torn to pieces, you can tell the country is recovering! It's just very war-torn and a mess and we weren't enjoying spending time there, there were lots of places the hostel suggested not to go to because of muggings and we found we just didn't want ... read more

Heluu!! Midt inne i ingensteder!

Tofo is your typical backpacker’s beach paradise. The beach is ok and the beer cold, plentiful and cheap. Just the thing I needed after doing nothing for three weeks. Not much more to say apart from that my headache is getting better by the minute and I left the place without any permanent damage to my liver. It would have been the place to see whale sharks and manta rays but with my knee still not in great shape that wasn’t an option. A short but worthwhile stopover was Inhambane from which we intended to get a bus further up north. I already resigned to African cities being boring but Inhambane had a very pleasant feel to it which is partly explained by trash free wide tree lined streets, the near absence of cars and the ... read more

Hi! It's been quite some time since my last post. I've been wanting to add more pictures from Nambiia to the site, but the uploading has failed everytime. So, I can only hope that when I try to add my new pictures from Mozambique, they'll load properly. But now, I'd like to fill you in on what I've been up to. This past week I've been in Mozambique. We had a few days off school for public holidays so a few of my housemates and I decided to skip a couple of days of school and make a holiday of it. We went to Maputo for a day at the beginning and a day and a half at the end of the trip. The rest of our days were spent in Tofo, a seven hour drive ... read more

Happy Easter everybody. We are currently in the beach town of Tofo, still on the southern coast of Mozambique. I appreciate all the messages people send me, and emails, and facebook posts, etc. In other words, I like the attention. We have spent 8 nights here, and are leaving for the capital city of Maputo tomorrow. Tofo is a popular travel destination for South Africans, and right now is spring holidays for both Mozambique and South Africa. Needless to day the place is littered with tourists, though it is more of a destination for families than for backpackers at the moment. Mozambique is not as friendly as Malawi, and also much more expensive. Our bank accounts have survived by staying in dorm rooms and cooking our own meals. Our time in Tofo has been extremely fascinating. ... read more

No falo portugues Crossing into Mozambique we left behind empty shops and multi-million dollar bus tickets and returned to a country where English is not the first, or even the second language. After the ease of English speaking Zambia, Botswana and Zimbabwe it was a bit of a rude awakening to encounter customs officials who could not speak English. Portuguese is the mother tongue here but with her reasonable Spanish and high school French Tracey bumbled us through into African country number nine. Continuing with the kindness of strangers theme we were offered a lift from the border to Chimoi by a white farmer from Zimbabwe who has lost two farms and now lives and works in Mozambique instead. Arriving in Chimoi we purchased our bus tickets to get down the coast and nearly choked at ... read more

Is it a whale? Is it a shark? No, it's a whale shark! Despite its name, it is neither a whale nor a shark, but in fact the largest fish in the world, and we FINALLY got to swim alongside one! There are only a few places in the world where whale sharks hang out, and Mozambique is one of them. We spent the majority of our time in the seaside town of Tofo, Mazombique's main backpacker haunt. Our little rickety bungalow was perched on a sand dune right above the beach, and even had a sand floor. On three mornings out of the five, we went diving. The first day we dived a site named Hogwarts. Scott and I thought that, being Africa, it really ought to be named Warthogs! We'd really been hoping to ... read more
