The cancelled trip to Maputo was back on when I heard I wouldn't be going to Korea in December. So after a frustrating start to the trip when Annie locked herself in the bathroom and Roisin's dad had to break the door so we could get her out, we started the long drive to Maputo entertaining ourselves with confusing the Garmin since we knew the route better. This was mine and Annie's third time in Maputo so we knew the drill but we were lucky enough to explore the town more(The Garmin is definately worth the rands). We went on a quest to find internet services(quite a mission since most places close down for Natal(Xmas) and found the Nautilus Coffee shops(Maputo Mall and Julius Nyere Road). They had good food - we savoured the popular pastel ... read more

22 Oct - we leave South Africa and cross the border...eventually, into Mozambique. One of the more chaotic borders and as only Livie and I have visas, it's a long, hot wait while the rest of the guys get their visas and passports stamped. Interesting change in countryside. Poverty is instantly more apparent, scattered single storey houses, villages rather than towns and cities and more chaotic driving. We arrive at the campsite late afternoon to find 3 extremely cute collie dogs. I'm in my element playing with them, sooooo cute. Very windy night (and that's not due to the pap we have for dinner - a white, mealie African dish, cross between rice and mashed potato!) so we head to the bar. Very drunken, the first one of this part of the trip though. Involves lots ... read more

i must be quick, i have 4 remaining minutes. i have a mozambique cell number for anyone wishing to speak to me while i am here. it is (00258) 829874034. the 00258 is the country code. it is a cell so it may be necessary to dial +258 instead of 00258, then my number? but i don't think so. it is much cheaper to call from the usa than it is to call to it. if it is cheap enough for you feel free to ring. chau ps. i will hopefully update blog soon!!... read more

“One thousand meticas, your fine.” The Mozambican policeman sentences Tony for driving over a street divider in swerving from hitting two people sitting in the middle of a pothole-stricken road in pitch dark. There were no signs, no visible clue as to the street splitting into two ways. The policeman sits waiting with his tattered notebook, looking to his fellow officer on the right. Tony protests that he isn’t paying a fine for something that ridiculous. “How much you have? OK, two thousand meticas, your fine!” Tony shakes his head, We’re on holiday, we haven’t got that much money on us! “Where you come from? Botswana!” as he looks at the plates. “Two thousand meticas,” he holds out his hand. Tim tells him to give us the ticket and we will go pay at the police ... read more

So this is the first chance I've had in a while to update things. Currently I am in Maputo, Mozambique. This is a very pleasant city, lots of tropical plants, large trees with overhanging branches, old aesthetic buildings of Portuguese infuence. Not huge and asphyxiating like Johannesburg. Of course, there is the typical African street markets, beggars, trash strewn about, etc. But I have to say, that I am becoming more accustomed to all of that. For better or worse, it doesn't seem as unusual or dramatically discouraging to see dirty, shoeless children rooting through broken glass to find something of value. Certainly everywhere has its destitute, America is no exception, but it just seems to be overwhelming here. Anyhow, when I last signed off I was on the way to Durban. I ended up spending ... read more

I decided to get to the Intercape Mainliner to Mozambique. It's about an 8hr bus ride depending on how long the border crossing takes. I was at Park Station, the main bus station in Joburg very early in the morning and I will just say it's perhaps not the friendliest place in the world. I met some Spanish and Portugese people who were also waiting for the bus, they could speak English but not that well. For the first time it occurred to me Mozambique was going to present different challenges to the rest of my travels. It was the first country I was going to visit where English was not one of the official languages. I cannot speak a word of Portugese! The border crossing was chaos, very busy, no directions, the whole time I ... read more

Maputo, the capital of Mozambique, is what Lonely Planet describes as one of the most agreeable capital cities in Africa. Don’t get me wrong I liked Maputo but I fear for the worst in the other countries. The Portuguese knew how to build a city, stuff as many trees in as possible and then build some attractive building. The city is at the moment a wild mix of recently renovated building, buildings, which haven’t seen a new coat of paint in years and some, which clearly haven’t been inhabited for a long time. Not really surprising as the so-called civil war that ravaged the country for many years ended sometime in the 90s and it left the country in a miserable shape. Therefore it is quite amazing that the city recovered and is in the shape ... read more

EN FRANCAIS PLUS BAS MORE PHOTOS HERE The Bus Odyssey from Manzini to Maputo Even before 7am, the bus terminal in Manzini, Swaziland's second main city, is swarming with activity, shouting drivers trying to fill up their buses. I ask "Maputo?" and get thrown into a bus that says "Lomahashah" or something like that. Seized by doubt, I ask around "Does this bus go to Maputo?" to other passengers. Answers vary from "Yes", "Maybe", a smile, a shake of the head, a wave of the hand, "sit down" and whatever else. After 20 minutes of investigation, I finally find the driver who tells me I can get a bus from Lomahashah to Maputo easily, but NO I want to go directly to Maputo! It takes me another 15 minutes to find the correct bus, a few ... read more

i've driven like a fiend straight down, across, through and around and now out my hotel window is shining, strange maputo. it's a city that is still learning how to be a city, the way that africans in general seem to be learning how to be people, people from the television. if there was never a television imported to africa these africans would not know about wearing their hats backwards, or low over their eyes, or about walking with a swing step, or about building and living in cement. everyone says it who has come here, that the problem is wherever the west goes, along with it goes the problems of the west. the question is if the original problems of africa are worse than our replacement problems. the original problems... disease, famine, poverty... they can ... read more
