Sorry it has been a while. So, for an update. I went home as a surprise to everyone (except my dad) in May. It was great, and I really enjoyed going around confusing people. I even visited WV and NYC while in the states (apart from NC). It was great, and I ate A LOT. I was worried that when I returned to Malawi I wouldn't be able to adjust back, but it turned out that it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I flew back into Lilongwe just in time to "rest" in the transit house for a few nights with friends before the new health group arrived. As a PC Malawi tradition (and I read somewhere that other countries actually do this too), PC provides transport from the Lilongwe office ... read more

Hey! Well, Africa was amazing, I am doing today's blog update on Malawi as there is just too much for each place to stick it all into one entry! Mark and I arrived in Lilongwe, Malawi after our 8 hour flight from London to Nairobi, layover for a couple hours in the AM and then 2.5 hours flight from Nairobi to Lilongwe. We were met by our driver/guide Henry and cook Raphael. We didn't yet realize that they were booked just for us for the first 5 days of our holiday. Henry was quite friendly and informed us about various things in their culture. We took a few different roads to check out things such as the tobacco farming, etc. It would take us a few hours to get from the airport to Mua Mission where ... read more

I have been very busy this month! A short recap: At the beginning of April I attended a Malawi Blood Transfusion training in Lilongwe. It ended up being only myself and one other volunteer (Tessa)... A lot of people had come into town for a camp GLOW fundraiser, and therefore did not plan to go to the training. My friend and I thought it would be sooo weird and boring because it was just the two of us (and there were more trainers for the seminar than there actually were trainees, haha) but it turned out being quite informative and fun, and we got free tea and lunch! That Friday we also celebrated Tracey's birthday at Summer Park (a local restaurant that serves good milkshakes, but only decent pizzas in my opinion). I then returned to ... read more

So, I should start with the bad news and get it out of the way. I think I heard somewhere that bad things come in threes... My three this month (in no particular order) are: my ipod was stolen, my garden was destroyed, and my boyfriend broke up with me. As for the first there is not much to say...I was really sick (A lovely case of viral gastroenteritis) and while I was passed out in between my sprints to the toilet someone went into my bag and took it :( For the latter, I'm not comfortable talking about THAT. And for my garden, it was a little special form of nuisance by the local little ewes (aka: rotten kids). While I was at work these children were in the habit of breaking into my garden ... read more

Lieve allemaal!

This month has been very SLOW. I guess looking at the pictures it appears that I have done a lot, but I feel like I have not. The students were supposed to arrive back to school January 5th. Unfortunately they have not yet returned. I do not want to get into too much detail right now because I think that things have become political with the elections coming up in a few months…but it all has to do with the student’s school fees. Anyway, the school year ends before the first week in April in all of the Christian Health Association of Malawi (CHAM) nursing schools. The first year students were my priority because they were scheduled to have 6 weeks of theory lectures, and a week to study before taking their end of year exams ... read more

I don’t know what it is with my bathroom but it is like a Zoo! Well actually I do know what it is - the drain from the bath goes directly outside my bathroom window and directly into the drain it is clearly at sufficiently a shallow angle to allow any and all animals smaller than drain size to come in as well water to go out. On a more or less daily basis I have any number of bugs coming in. Of course you will know that spiders are my least favourite; but fortunately Steph is completely unphased by them. I am so over cockroaches I just leave them there and they find their way out again. Little bugs are fine but the small scorpions worry me a bit. Most days I have a ... read more
