Arrival in Lilongwe I've arrived in Lilongwe this afternoon. I'll write a longer post later since my battery is dying, but I wanted to make sure everyone saw this. My phone number for the summer is +265 99 321 3084 - I get free incoming calls, so feel free to call whenever. ~ Jon... read more

A lot has happened since I last wrote. The project has progressed, local colleagues have come and gone, the weather and environment has changed and, as always, I have learned new things. The project is progressing by leaps and bounds. We started with visits to 9 communities in November but, after a fair bit of research into local prevalence rates, many visits with village chiefs, coordination with hospital volunteers, and advertising (posters, word of mouth, announcements in local churches etc.) we have now doubled that number. Our schedule is constantly changing as we try to make space for visits to new villages and more frequent visits to areas where we have experienced high turnouts. During a visit to a health center in Nkhwazi earlier this week we performed our highest number of CD4 tests so far ... read more

Whew. Not much to say about February. Same old same old. The students have not come back yet, but there is a RUMOR that the students will all be coming back on Monday. We are now 8 weeks behind so there is no way that they can catch up so the calendar will probably be pushed back. That means the new students will probably not arrive until June or so, and all my travel plans are going to have to be shifted. My colleagues and I have been doing in-service trainings with the nurses, clinical officers and medical assistants on Wednesdays in the hospital. That at least has given us something to do. I have to teach something about Vaccines in April... Elly and I have been walking Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 515am. It ... read more

Arrival - 13th December 2008 I flew to Malawi after a 3 day layover in Johannesburg - as sad I was to leave it at the end of my trip, I'd never really liked Jo'burg that much and so I was grateful to finally be going to Malawi - my home for the next 10 days. Flying with Air Malawi - mine was the only white face to be seen and I have to say it, as much as I have grown to love the African people, when you're surrounded on a plane the smell is.....a little intense. Despite 2 hours of intense heat and severe body odor, I loved this flight. Everyone and I mean everyone was singing, clapping, talking - teachers recognized students they hadn't seen for years, friends met unexpectedly - it was ... read more

We were all awake early today. Have ever been kept awake by ghekos before!! Noisy little buggers! They also kept throwing each other off the walls and then landing with a splat on my mossie net! Not really conducive to a good night's sleep! We drove most of the morning to get here to Lilongwe. The guidebook that I was reading on the way up said that not many people seem to stop off here.... Now I can see why. The lake area of Malawi is beautiful as are the mountains and forests but the cities leave a lot to be desired! The highlight was going into Shoprite and finding 'Body on Tap'!!!! Tonight we are staying at a backpackers place that has frankly seen better days. It will be cosy as Zane,Glen and I are ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving! Maybe this weekend I will have pictures of Thanksgiving up...we will see how transport is. I hope to be back at my site by Monday since I got a ride with one of the Ambulances (the only way to travel! ha!). Don't worry, I am not sick. Soo, TODAY I am very excited because all the Peace Corps Volunteers are going to the Ambassador's house for Thanksgiving. There is supposed to be A LOT of food. And he has a pool. Alright, let me rewind a little bit. I set off for Cathy's not long ago with Kelly. And Cathy's dog. And dog food. And mat. And all our stuff... get the picture? We finally arrived at her site not long before dark. We met all her neighbors, cleaned her house, and she cooked ... read more

We left Kandi Beach Camp at 11:00am which is a late start by usual standards but it was good as it gave my hangover time to ease off a bit. About three minutes after leaving camp, before we hit the main road the truck got stuck in the sand. Everyone had to jump out whilst we got sand mats under the tyres to get the truck out again. It was so hot and took ages to do. The whole village seemed to come out to watch us and brought extra shovels to help dig us out of it. We spent most of the time playing with the kids from the village who were on a lunch break from school. We took pictures of them and let them see themselves on the screen and were swinging them ... read more

“South Africans are good at building houses” I am very pleased to be able to say that several weeks of working with a local Clearing Agent and the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) have paid off. Our project truck has finally been ‘let go’ and we were able to bring her home last night. One additional thing that resulted from all of this bureaucracy is that I spent so much time at the offices of the Clearing Agent that I have made a few new friends in the staff there and have received a dinner invitation! The reactions from the hospital staff that have seen the truck so far were very positive. Kapoza, one of the current hospital drivers, drove the truck home with a big smile on his face and took great pleasure in pointing out ... read more

Hey! So I arrived in Lilongwe this past Wednesday. I came up with some people from the office, so that was a nice way to travel...Beats the matola! Anyway, so I have been very busy. 2 weeks ago I had to teach 20 hours of Nutrition. It was my first time meeting these kids (I say kids but they were all my age, maybe older), and then they were stuck with me 4 hours a day in the MORNING all week. I am sure they LOVED it. But, they found out that I used to do tae kwon do, so they really want me to teach them. I haven't decided yet. If I did start it would not be until January, but I am still on the fence about it. I can just picture us kicking ... read more
