Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Decided we would go on hike in the National Park. Stopped at Mitsinjo and they arranged for Youseffa to be our guide. Paid and headed into the park. Youseffa told us the Legend of the Indri indri. There are several versions but the one (as we understood it) is there was a young boy out in the forest looking for honey and he got lost and the indri indri found him and started calling and this alerted the village and he was saved. Because of this, it is "fady" taboo to eat the meat of the indri indri. According to research as cultural ties are breaking down this taboo is not being honored as much. More about the indri indri..There are four enemies of the indri indri--man, raptor, and the arbor snake. The arbor ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085nofrom the forest to the lawn went the lemurs and then we walked to Mitsinjo and left two more companions....the little chairs and then checked out the story boards at park Leaving the notes because in retrospect is funny about making the decision to donate things to Mitsinjo. We have another set of these chairs back home and these were right on the edge of falling to pieces! While we were eating breakfast some brown lemurs appeared across the stream from where we were. Started watching them because they appeared to be planning to cross the stream and come to our side and sure enough that is what they did! Went to the end of a branch and then LEAP across! Laughed as they looked around planning their next move. Did not swing on ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Decided today would be a good day to go to the VOI MMA. We fortified ourselves with omellettes from Marie's with a side of potatoes. Got some of their wonderful spicy sauce to mix with them. The bicycle taxi came past and Derrick went to tell him we wanted to ride with him to VOI MMA and so he waited for us and we were amused to watch Derrick trying out the bicycle taxi.Off we went! You do not realize how much is downhill until you are heading down the hill at a fast clip! He does take advantage of the downhill to rest! Rookie move....we did not negotiate the price before we got in and of course he over charge us but we were so glad for the ride.He took us only to ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085ake One of the things you discover is communication can get confusing at times. There have been several times when we thought things were clear and then it becomes apparent they were not! Our guide was to meet us at Feon'ny ala and walk to Mitsinjo because we had seen several birds as we have walked there and thought it would be interesting to see what we could see.Guide did not show and Patrick called and he was at Mitsinjo. We walked on over there and he was going to be with another group so we will have Christian who also speaks English and he left the book with us. Did get to see a lot of birds on the walk starting with the paradise flycatcher blue phase. We did see a much larger ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Slow moving morning but finally get moving and go to Mitsinjo for another walk. They are such a good value and you always see something interesting. We decided to just do a short walk and Jeano was our guide again. We finally got to see a leaf tailed gecko! Was not like what the pictures in our book suggest it looked like but this is what Jeano said it was and later when we saw it again it was this same gecko. Found the indri indri again and watched them as they were being fed. They explained to us this group knows they will be fed and stay pretty close to the area where people will be walking. After the walk, we went back and talked to Tiana about possibly going and seeing the captrive breeding ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Very slow moving morning and after breakfast walk to Mitsinjo and make the final decision to donate our tent to them. They have tents for rent on their website and seemed appreciative that we were adding another one to theirs to rent. We also gave them our two thermarests that have served us so well for about 15 years we figure. Besides donating these to a group we respect, we are trying to get rid of some of our weight as we move so we will not have to pay so much for baggage as we already have had to do with Air Mauritius. Used this story title to put up some of the many bird pictures we have taken here.... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085After a short rest, we headed down for the night walk. When we got to the bottom of the stairs saw something moving in the trees. Went and looked and it was a group of brown lemurs. Got our first sighting before we left the place! A researcher on vacation came walking up while we were looking at them. She was studying another specie of lemur, this one a black lemur with turquoise eyes. Was really enjoying her research but also her time on vacation! Were joined by Matthew and walked to Mitsinjo. Tudy was there as well as another person and Tudy said this man's guide had not shown up and could he come with us. Not a problem for us and the guide that supposed to be there for us also did not ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085tdo Decided today was the day to go to Moramonga and change some money and see if they had some supplies we needed. Had our breakfast at Marie's and had an omelette. They have a killer hot peanut sauce that is great on most anything!Robin at Marie's helped us flag down the taxi brousse and tell them we wanted to go to the BOA(Bank of Africa). The taxi brousse was not full and we were able to watch the comings and goings on the road to Moramonga. There are regular stopping places but people can stand out on road and flag it down. It was misting rain the entire trip and the driver was going a little fast for my taste. It is interesting when the taxi brousse stops, usually by signal from money collector ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085As with any big event, up before the alarm goes off! Down for "healthy breakfast" and looking for our driver. Were expecting the Mitsinjo vehicle but Patrick, one of theit waiters tells us our driver is here. Not the Mitsinjo vehicle and the driver only speaks Malagasy and French! With help of Patrick we head out. Go to the National Park and the driver and man riding in back of truck get out. What is happening? The driver had to buy his ticket and while he was at it visit a bit with his friends already at the park ready to work. Get to Andisabe and Yousseth and Lisa are picked up and we are off! The drive takes a little over two hours and the road is very rough and in some places ... read more

Geo: -18.9427, 48.4085Our biggest problem with the move to Feon'ny ala is we have run out of coffee and have no gas for the stove so have to go down to the restaurant for coffee in the morning! Got spoiled having it right outside our tent! Hope to find a hot plate or water boiler so we can have a first cup in our room!Had a nice breakfast and decided to take the taxi brousse to Andisabe and see how much air time we have left and get some supplies for our hike to Mantadia tomorrow. Caught the taxi brousse in front of Maria's and squeezed in to the amusement of the locals, I am sure! Every seat is full, so 27 in the bus and add two more just outside the village. We had asked ... read more
