Awhile back (2 months - yes I have been slacking on my blog updates!) I took my first safari in Kenya to Lake Nakuru National Park with some friends from Kisumu. The park was initially established as a bird sanctuary and is Kenya’s first established rhino sanctuary and therefore has one of the largest concentrations of black rhino in the country (Nakuru is also home to white rhino). The park has 500 species of bird including 2 difference flamingo species whose populations can number up to 1.5 million at a time. The cats represented are lions, cheetahs, hyenas, leopards and jackals. Then of course there are baboons, zebras, giraffes, water buffalo and gazelles. Of this we saw everything except cats - but surely not every bird species.
Despite some rain on the first day our game drive was spectacular. The park is surrounded by a fence that is to prevent the town of Nakuru from encroaching on the animals habitat. The view of the lake and the millions of flamingos was the most impressive, as the shores were tinted pink. We also saw both black and white rhinos on our first day, which was amazing - they are so prehistoric

This is the signboard on the way into the park which can give you an idea of how it's set up. looking. We took another game drive early on Sunday morning before hopping back on a bus to Kisumu - it was a whirlwind weekend but we did get two great game drives in and saw plenty of animals. The most impressive part was the flamingos and one baboon we saw who had probably recently gotten into an altercation with one of the cats because his leg was badly beat up -reminding me that this is an actual game park and not just a zoo.
I have posted a selection of the hundreds and hundreds of pictures I took which will give you a better view of the park than I could begin to describe - enjoy!
