there is a restaurant in nairobi that is rated one of the top 50 in the world. it's called carnivore and it's famous for, you guessed it, meat. vegetarians, read no further. the meal starts off with soup and bread. who do they think they are dealing with? like i'm gonna be stupid enough to fill up on bread? i had a few spoons of soup to taste and waited. next comes the two-tiered plate with sauces for the meat on top and salads on the bottom. on the middle of the top plate goes the flag. as long as the flag is up, they will keep serving you. then, you wait again. over comes the first server with a big skewer of something. "what is it?" "spare ribs" "ok, one." he puts a rib on ... read more

Greetings from Kenya! I finally made it! Thank JESUS! After almost 24 hours of traveling I'm finally here. I went to Amsterdam on transit and took a tour of the city. I fell asleep during the tour, but I did wake up for the tour of "Diamond Land" lol. My favorite place! They showed us how they shaped diamonds into what they look like on jewlery. I'll post pictures of that later. Now, I've been in Kenya for about 10 hours. It is pretty hot :(.So far I've taken a nap, went to get a SIM card (but my phone hasn't been unlocked yet...thank you T-mobile) and now I'm at the National Youth Peace Association office, who are the people organizing our mission. We're going to the Coptic Church right now to see if we can ... read more

It's my second trip to Kenya, and this time it's for my wedding. How excited could I be? Nervous, anxious, nauseous...all symptoms of a groom to be, and in another country with lots and lots of family!! All in all, it worked out, and I made it there and back in one piece (to my wedding, and to Kenya - he he). Here are some pics. Ended up hanging out at Crater Lake lodge, and my wife and I stayed in the honeymoon suite for one night. This resort is situated within a crater formed by a meteor some time ago, and to get there, you need to climb down to the lodge nestled in the crater. That part is easy, just wait till you have to climb back up! Rating? Awesome. Why? Leopards roam at ... read more

It's best if I admit upfront that I adore cranky hotels, I can't abide the shiny 7 star palaces that are springing up anywhere you can plant a golf course. Well, I fell lucky on the north coast of Mombasa a couple of years ago. The hotel had an auto-reverse cassette deck, which provided piped music to every nook and cranny of the hotel. Unfortunately, a cassette was jammed in the machine, you have probably guessed already, but to spell it out, the cassette tape had a crinkle, or heaven knows, possibly a sellotaped join, and every 63 seconds (to be precise) the tape would switch and play the other side. So, while relaxing to the delights of Strauss' waltz 'The Blue Danube', Simon and Garfunkle would interrupt rudely with their rendition of 'Bridge over troubled ... read more

Wow, what a week it has been, last Wednesday I set off with my 1 other group member - yes there are only 2 of us right now? How bizarre is that? I was a bit miffed at first but it has all worked out well. Kelly and myself are getting on well and having a great time, we're also making the most of having the whole truck to oursleves!!! We also have 2 crew, a driver and a guide, they're both Zimbabweans and are really cool too, plus Heath the guide can really cook which is great!!!! Heath says that this first 3 weeks as we head North is never as popular so that explains why there are only 2 of us. When we get back to Nairobi we're picking up more people which will ... read more

"I love the smell of Dettol in the morning." Paul the driver stares through his shades at another bunch of raw recruits, timid and trembling at their first African dawn. Ok, so it takes a few days to adjust. The first thing you have to get used to is hygiene. Lots of dettol and no tea towel, so lots of flapping to dry plates, dishes etc. Then you need to understand how the truck and the camp runs which takes a bit of getting used to. A typical day so far: Get up at 5.30am, about an hour before dawn. Check around the tent for Lions with my headtorch. The wind rips through the campsite as we are high up on an escarpment above a large platea. Get the charcoal on the chicos (round charcoal burners) ... read more

NAIROBI (Oct 19-20) No previous life experience could have prepared us for our arrival in Nairobi. As soon as we left the baggage claim area we were bombarded by touts trying to sell us every possible service including safari packages, accommodations, city guides, taxis, and meals. Once we found one another in the sea of touts, we fought our way through the crowd to the ‘Government Tourist Bureau’ in hopes of coordinating transportation from the airport and accommodations in the city. After a quick orientation to the highlights of Kenya and a basic language lesson, it became evident that the tourist bureau was in fact a private tour company trying to make a hard sell on a safari package, which of course was leaving early the following morning. An hour later, we managed to leave the ... read more

Six days to go and we're both feeling as nervous as virgin Big Brother contestants waiting for the fun to begin ... except there are no prizes and no chance of fame afterwards. Yes, we're off with Exodus down through Africa for 11 weeks, from Nairobi to Cape Town .. something like Kenya - Uganda - Kenya - Tanzania - Malawi - Zambia - Botswana - Namibia - South Africa. So what are we most nervous of ? Camping all those nights ? All those nasty diseases ? No telly (is this the only way to escape from the next series of BB ?). I'll leave it to you to guess. Then it's back to the UK for April, a couple of weddings and a trio of visas, and then we head off to April - ... read more

Kenya has a diverse climate, ranging from the rich and fertile great rift valley, the Masai Mara plains, and the desert like ranges of the north. Overall, the MUST do's in Kenya are a safari. You cannot come to this part of the world and NOT experience the Big five in their true wild habitat. Also, once you have experienced true Kenyan hospitality in resorts and hotels, you will never be able to compare their services to any other part of the world. ... read more
