Day 16 Jinja Uganda - Eldoret Kenya 23.6.09
Today we left Uganda and headed back to Kenyan boarder. The camp we left behind had a wooden shack outside with the words ”Avoid Morning Sex Africa” painted on all sides, out of all the crazy signs we've seen this is by far the best sign yet although there was also ”Deathrow Hair Salon” & ”We Cut Black People Hair”. We had a drive day so were happy when we stopped at a supermarket where we bought a Paw Paw and some gifts. We then spent the rest of the drive to our bush camp with a song stuck in our heads - When you pick a Paw Paw, or a prickly pear, and you pick a raw paw, well next time beware, dont pick the prickly pear with the paw, when you pick a pear try to use the claw, but you dont need to use the claw when you pick a pear of the big Paw Paw!
Day 17 Eldoret - Nakuru
We left camp really early today so we could get to Lake Nakuru National Park at around lunch time, we were told we could buy lunch and take
it with us so we got some potato fritters. At the entrance to the park there were loads of monkeys playing (we think they were Vervet Monkeys) and had no problems with coming up close to us. We were all watching them when we heard a shout and looked around to see one of them in the vehicle stealing our bag of fritters and leg it up the nearest tree, then another one starting chasing a couple of the group. In the park we saw all the usual, Zebra, Giraffe, Buffalo, Rhino, Hyena, Flamingos, Pelicans, Storks, Vultures (eating dead Buffalo),Lions, Monkeys, Baboons, Warthogs, Gazelles, Waterbuck, Guinea fowl, a Woodpecker and hundreds of birds. We headed up a mountain to the viewpoint, it was breath taking seeing all the park below and trying to make out the different animals. There was a baboon just sitting against a tree relaxing with his penis hanging out, we got close to him to take some photos and he wasn’t bothered then a Chinese guy went up to it a put his camera in his face to take a photo and the baboon went for him, what an idiot. Anna (fellow tour member) had some
nuts and gave me some, the baboon decided he wanted them so he started approaching us but was shooed away by the drivers then out of nowhere another one appeared and jumped into the vehicle and took the bag Anna had put back. After the drive we were taken to our new camp for the night where Mike, Gary, Aaron, Me & Bridget played darts, I came 3rd and Mike last and I started after him!!!
Day 18 Nakuru - Nairobi
We made our way back to Karen Camp in Nairobi where the tour started from. We were losing 4 members of our trip to be replaced with another 15!! What a nightmare, we can no longer lay down over several seats. We had to all clean the truck ready for the newbies. Obviously there was going to be a party so I went to the tent after the cleaning to get some sleep while everyone else started drinking. I wasn’t hungry so woke up after dinner, got ready and headed to the bar. There were plenty of shots of Zappa and Tequila to be had and Smirnoff. After a bit of Scottish dancing it was off to bed
with spinning heads and feeling rather ill.
Day 19 Nairobi
We woke to the news Michael Jackson is dead. We visited the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage which only opens for 1 hour a day to have a talk and see the orphaned elephants being fed and playing in the mud and water. Some elephants came close so we could pet them and play a bit of football with them. We were told how some of them came to be there which was really upsetting hearing about the poaching and seeing the photos of the traps used. After the elephants they brought out a baby Black Rhino which was also orphaned so they took it in, he was so funny jumping about in the dirt and mud. It was a birthday celebration in the evening for Bridget so we had party hats and masks but after last night not many were drinking so we played Uno and Poker. We had to say goodbye to Gulin and Gary as they were 2 of the people leaving the tour, it was a shame because we really got on with them and they will be missed.
Day 20 Nairobi - Arusha Tanzania
We
left camp at 6am and were taken to the local supermarket so the truck could go off to pick up the new people joining the trip. We only had around 350shilling left to buy ourselves breakfast & lunch which is only a few pounds. We didn’t think we´d manage it but we´re used to being tight by now that it was easy and we didn’t go hungry. Today we said goodbye to the last 2 leaving, Aaron and Lisa but we´ll be meeting up with them again soon in Brisbane. On the way to the boarder to cross into Tanzania we were held up by Masai warriors protesting over not being paid for working on the road. They had laid Acacia branches over the road which have thorns on about 2inches long and as hard as nails and they has their machetes. It didn’t take too long for the police to show up and move them to the side so we could pass. Once in Tanzania the scenery seemed to change instantly to a very arid landscape with no greenery. We passed several Masai villages on our way to Snake Park where we will be staying the next few nights.
In the bar Mike, Flemming & I played darts again & I won. Content with my victory I went to bed.
